Angelina Jolie underwent double Mastectomy

- an astrological review of the event

Angelina Jolie has taken many bold decisions in her life and this one was probably the boldest so far. Angelina decided to go for double mastectomy to reduce the chances of getting breast cancer. She says that with this action of her, the chances of her getting breast cancer has come down to 5% from an earlier probability of 87%. It is great to see Brad Pitt fully supported her in this. The following lines have been taken from USA Today which reported the story on her:

About one in 500 women have a mutation in genes called BRCA1 or BRCA2, which are involved in repairing genetic mistakes.

Jolie said she was tested for the mutation because her mother died at age 56, nearly a decade after being diagnosed.

Having a mutation in BRCA1 gives women a 54% chance of developing breast cancer and a 39% chance of ovarian cancer by age 70, according to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Having a double mastectomy can reduce those risks by more than 90%, although there is still a small risk that cancer could develop in the skin left behind, or in the armpit.

Yet for the many women who may very well be inspired by Jolie's revelation and moved to act, prohibitive costs can stand in the way of these types of proactive treatments.

She went through a surgery and reconstruction procedure for a period of three months starting February 2013 and ending in May2013. It is really surprising that she was able to keep the news under wraps for such a long time, which would be a big task for a celebrity like her who is always under the media scanner.

The purpose of this write-up is to view this event through an astrological lens. It helps to have ‘AA’ rated birth details for Angelina Jolie. It is important to look into these two questions:

  •           Does her chart indicate mastectomy at this point in time?
  •           Was she really susceptible to breast/ovarian cancer?

Following is the natal chart of Angelina Jolie:

Astrological Indication of Mastectomy:

There are two views on which house represents breasts. Many take 4th house for breasts. However, Varahamihira in his Brihat Jataka and Mantreshwara in his Phala Deepika have clearly mentioned that chest/breasts should be seen from the third house.

Breasts are indicated by the 3rd house and the karaka for breasts is Moon. 3rd lord is Mercury in this case. Surgery/wound is generally indicated by Mars. Mars is conjunct Moon and aspects 3rd house. 3rd lord Mercury is in the nakshatra of Mars. In addition, Mercury is afflicted by Rahu/Ketu axis. As both Moon, 3rd house and 3rd lord are under the grip of Mars, one can say that there is a high probability of her breasts coming under knife. The vimshottari period during the time of the procedure was Ven-Mer-Mar. It may be noted that Venus is disposited by Moon, the karaka for breasts, Mercury is the lord of 3rd house representing breasts and Mars is the karaka for surgery. Looks very reasonable period for the event to take place.

Looking at the transits around mid February, 3L Mercury was in the 8th house conjunct karaka for surgery Mars, in trines with saturn/Rahu (the lords of the 8th house). The transits also indicate the possibility of the event.

Is she susceptible for breast/ovarian cancer?

Cancer is caused due to the combined effect of malefic Jupiter and Rahu. As Jupiter owns 6th house of diseases, and that being his MT sign, Jupiter is clearly malefic in the chart. Jupiter is conjunct Moon and aspects 3rd house. Jupiter is in the nakshatra of 3rd lord Mercury. Jupiter has his finger on all the three. Similarly, Rahu is samasaptaka to Mercury, in trines to Moon and occupies Virgo (3rd house in Rasi) in Navamsha. Thus Rahu also has the finger on all the three that matter. Hence, one could say that she is high degree susceptible for breast cancer.

Ovaries are indicated by 8th house in the chart of a woman. The karaka for ovaries is Venus. 8th lord is Saturn. Venus though placed in a Kendra, it is in the nakshatra of 8th lord Saturn, thus under an affliction. Venus is in trines to both Jupiter and Rahu and hence is influenced by the combination.  Saturn is in the nakshatra of Jupiter and Rahu is in the nakshatra of Saturn. Thus, Saturn also comes under the combined influence of Jupiter and Rahu. As 8th house is Aquarius, it has the influence of Rahu. Jupiter occupies Aquarius in Navamsha thus influencing the 8th house in Rasi. Thus, there is again a lot to say that she is susceptible to ovarian cancer too, which took the life of her mother.

It may be noted that her lagna and lagna lord both are afflicted by the combined effect of Jupiter and Rahu. That indicates that she is susceptible to cancer in general. If it appears anywhere, it is likely to spread to other organs.

Probably, she did a good a very good thing by going for Mastectomy. But, the question is whether she will opt for Oophorectomy too?

Good. Only one conceptual question here for your views pls:
Jup sure is lord of 6 hence sure functional malefic but he also owns 9th which makes him functional benefic (strong benefic since he is natual benefic) hence Jup is said as "Benefic" for cancer lagna in Various texts. You sure have treated it differently. Can you help me get your views on how do you treat a planet who is both malefic by one house & benefic from another house he owns ? Thank you so much.

Yes, if a planet owns 9th, usually it is taken as functional benefic. However, I have given more importance to the Moolatrikona sign of a planet. In this case, Jupiter owns both the 6th and the 9th, and it so happens that its MT falls in the 6th. Hence, my take is that Jupiter will be a functional malefic in this chart.
