Tracking Psoriasis

Through Astrology

Psoriasis is a skin disease that has shattered many mentally and pushed many into depression, with a sense of shame sends them into hiding. It is not difficult to understand how heart breaking it would be for someone in the modeling profession to suffer from this dreaded, chronic disease. But, this brave girl CariDee English who in spite of suffering from the disease not only participated in the “America’s Next Top Model” context, but also won it! She did it in 2006 at the age of 24. She did have the problem since the age of five. It takes lots of guts not just to go public with this problem, in such an industry, but to show that one can thrive in such adverse conditions too, if one accepts the reality and learns to deal with it. Otherwise, she could have been another case of a person suffering from mental depression.

Psoriasis is a medical condition that occurs when skin cells grow too rapidly. Faulty signals in the immune system cause new skin cells to form in days rather than weeks. The body does not shed these excess skin cells, so the cells pile up on the surface of the skin and lesions get formed. Though there are different varieties of it, it is not the purpose of this article to go into those details. On the contrary, the purpose is to find the footprints of Psoriasis in astrological charts.

From the definition of Psoriasis, one can broadly see the problem as:

It is a disease of the skin and can occur on any part of the body including nails
Skin growth gets multiplied many a fold
It is a chronic condition
It is caused due to some malfunction in the immune system

Today, medical science has yet to pin point the actual causes for Psoriasis. It is believed that some genetic conditions are responsible for the disease to surface. Probably, the astrological charts can point to better clues in this regard!

When we try to map above facts to astrological parameters, we can say the following:

The problem could be related to affliction to Mercury
The planets causing multiplicity, Jupiter and/or 11th lord are involved
The above planets would have their influence on Mercury
Role of 8th lord should be seen in chronic conditions
As Rahu can cause malfunction of the immune system, will have a role to play

The investigation of charts of people suffering from Psoriasis started with the above astrological indications in focus. Though most of the above assumptions are found to be correct, there was on unique factor that stood out:

Invariably, there was a sambandha between Jupiter, the karaka for multiplicity and the 11L, the lord of multiplicity in most of the charts that were investigated.

This observation indicates that the factors promoting multiplicity have come together to cause growth rate of the skin to multiply at an alarming rate. Another interesting point that came out is that people with Leo lagna, or Scorpio lagna, or Aquarius lagna have higher chance of suffering from this disease. The reasons are as follows:

For Leo lagna, Mercury itself is the 11th lord and Jupiter is the 8th lord. Both these planets are involved in causing the disease.
For Scorpio lagna, Mercury is both the 8th lord and the 11th lord! Hence, the chronic condition and the multiplicity factor are already linked together and when Jupiter satisfies the other required condition in the chart, it is highly probable that the native suffers from the disease.
For Aquarius lagna, Jupiter is the 11th lord and Mercury is the 8th lord. Just a conjunction of these two satisfies most of the conditions necessary for the problem to crop up.

It does not mean that the natives with any other lagna will not have Psoriasis. Even when Jupiter and Mercury don’t own 8th or 11th houses, it is possible that they can either occupy those houses or have a sambandha with lords of those houses.Putting all the observations together, the footprint of Psoriasis in a natal chart can be generalized as below:

Affected body parts

The affected body parts will be generally indicated by the house where Mercury is placed. It can also be found in the body parts that are indicated by the houses owned by Mercury. When Mercury is placed in Lagna, multiple body parts could be affected as lagna indicates the body as a whole in general.

Timing

The problem could trigger during the dasha bhuktis of Mercury or the dasha bhuktis of planets having a sambandha with Mercury.

Kim is an Armenian-American businesswoman, socialite, television personality, model, and actress. She has been recently diagnosed to have Psoriasis on her legs. Even her mother Kris Jenner is known to be suffering from the same disease.

Psoriasis has first shown up on her legs. It may be noted that Mercury owns the 11th house (where Jupiter is also placed) and Mercury is placed in the 12th house. These two houses indicate legs and foot for the native.

Timing

She was diagnosed with Psoraisis recently during vimshottari dasha period of Mer-Jup! Both these planets form the core of the problem.

2. LeAnn Rimes (Astrodatabank birth data rating is ‘A’)

LeAnn Rimes is an American country-western singer with a mature voice at 13 that is similar to that of Patsy Cline. She has state that she suffered from Psoriasis since she was two years old.

As lagna lord Saturn is conjunct Mercury and disposited Mercury, she has the problem on many parts of her body.

Timing

She has it since she was two years old. That corresponds to the vimshottari dasha period of Ven-Ven. It may be noted that Venus is in the nakshatra of Mercury. Or, the problem could have initiated in Ket-Mer period too, slightly before she was two.

3. Ben Elton (Astrodatabank birth data rating is ‘A’)

Benjamin Charles Elton is an English comedian, writer and director. He became a stand-up comedian and comedy writer shortly after leaving university in 1980, and was a central figure in the alternative comedy scene in the 1980s. More recently he has achieved success writing lyrics for and producing musicals, and as an author. Ben has psoriasis. He has always suffered from the skin disease psoriasis, and he rolls up his trouser leg to show an angry rash. “I've got it all over. Doctors say I am a bad case, and other people tell me that I've got to stop working.”

It may be noted that Mercury occupies Chandra lagna and Jupiter occupies Lagna. As a result, he seems to have the condition on all over his body.

Timing

There is no information about when the problem started for him, though he has said that he had all the time. It is quite possible that he might have had it when his Mercury MD started around the age of 14.

4. John Updike (Astrodatabank birth data rating is ‘AA’)

John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, was plagued from an early age with psoriasis. In his book, "Self-Consciousness", he devoted an entire chapter to his lifelong battle with psoriasis called "At war with my skin." He states: "Because of my skin I counted myself out of any of those jobs - salesman, teacher, financier, movie star - that demand being presentable. What did that leave? Becoming a craftsman of some kind, closeted and unseen - perhaps a cartoonist or a writer, a worker in ink who can hide himself and send out a surrogate presence, a signature that multiplies even while it conceals." His grandmother is known to have also suffered from the same problem.

Charles Chaplin is one of the greatest entertainers of our times. He is a legend and one of the icons of American Cinema. This was one of the compelling reasons to study his chart and see his life events from Astrological perspective. Since Moon occupies Lagna in his case, the effects of each house, planet and bhava karakas get amplified as they get the same reference from both the Lagna and the Moon. This reduces the complexity of the chart and renders it easier for the beginners to understand his chart better. Hence, it would be an interesting case to study and understand his life through an Astro-Lense.

The above site gives his birth details taken from his biography. The birth time is given as 20:00 hrs., with a rating of ‘B’. This author has rectified the birth time to 19:51:05 hrs. using his own BTR technique. Exalted Sun has been taken as the strongest planet in the chart for the purpose of birth time rectification. As Sun is also the lord of 11^th house (of multiplicity), one could see prominent effects of multiplicity in the life of Charlie, in many spheres of his life.

First of all, this is a strong chart as three of the four kendras are occupied and Sun is in exaltation and Moon is more than 72 degrees away from the Sun. Both Sun and Moon occupy Kendras. Any chart with strong Sun and Moon can be considered as a strong chart. Because of this, most of the combinations or yogas will produce desired results for the native. Some of the important yogas seen in the chart are:

1. Ruchaka Yoga: Mars occupies a Kendra sitting in its Moola Trikona sign. This makes the native a born leader, enterprising and bold

Now, to some of the important events in his life. It is said that Charlie took to the stage for the first time at the age of five and that was the beginning of his long journey of entertainment and cinema. At that age, he was running Jup-Jup period. It may be noted that Jupiter occupies 3H of entertainment in his chart. Jupiter is also the lord of 3^rd house. It is the same house from Moon also as Moon occupies lagna. As third house could indicate many other things, why did he take to acting alone? The clue comes from the fact that Jupiter is in the nakshatra of Venus that represents fine arts. And, Jupiter disposits Rahu (media/cinema) in its nakshatra. Thus Jupiter draws energy from both Venus and Rahu and launched Charlie on to stage life and media glare.

It is also known that his father was a drunkard and didn’t take care of his family. Father can be seen both from the 9^th and the 10^th houses. It may be seen that both 9^th and 10^th houses host natural malefics Rahu and Saturn. Though Saturn is a yogakaraka in his chart, he will not do good to father as it is well know that he is an enemy of Sun, the karaka for father. Though Sun is exalted, it may be noted that Sun is in the nakshatra of Ketu thus having the relationship snapped. Moreover, 9^th lord Mercury is in the sign of debilitation though has crossed the deep debilitation point. Not only that the shadbala of Mercury is as low as 64! Mars the functional malefic in the chart is conjunct Sun (karaka for father), and aspects both 10^th house and 10^th lord Moon! Hence, it is a very strong indication that he did not have the pleasure of having the care and protection from his father. And, her mother’s health was not good for a long period of time. It may be noted that the functional malefic Mars aspects both 4^th lord Saturn and Karaka for Mother Moon. Moon is also in the nakshatra of Rahu.

He first went to USA during 1910 and lived there for a long 42 years of stage and cinema career! In 1910, he was running Sat-Sat period. Saturn occupies 10^th house of karma/profession and also sits in the constellation of 9^th lord (long journey) and 12^th lord (abroad) Mercury. As Saturn is also a Yogakara, he earned good name and fame during Saturn dasha. His media life continued during Mercury and Ketu periods. It may be noted that both Mercury and Ketu are disposited by Jupiter, during which period he came on to this profession.

His relationships and marriages need a special mention as he married as many as four times and to the girls who where much younger than him. He had a weakness for young beauties! That may be seen from the fact that both Venus and Mars occupy the seventh house. Conjunction of Mars and Venus also makes one a passionate lover. Following is a list of his four wives and their ages and their age difference with him at the time of their marriage:

His chart has the perfect combination for marriage with a big age difference with wife. It may be seen from the combined influence of Moon, Saturn and Rahu on his UL (Upapada Lagna), occupying the sign of Caner. Also, 11^th lord (of multiplicity) occupies 7^th house and conjunct 7^th lord Mars. To top this, the 7^th house in his navamsha chart (D9) has Jupiter, the karaka for multiplicity! Hence, there is a very strong indication of multiple marriages for him. Also, presence of Sun in the 7^th house is said to be detrimental to married life. That could be the reason for three broken marriages.

He had his first child during 1919, which was born with deformity and died just three days after birth. This was during Sat-Sun period. In his Saptamsha chart (D7), first child can be seen from Taurus (5^th from Saptamsha lagna). D7 Taurus has both Saturn, Sun and they are afflicted by debilitated Rahu and Ketu! As his 5th house co-lord Rahu is in the nakshatra of karaka for multiplicity, Jupiter and occupies a mutable sign, he had as many as ten more children later, of them eight from his last wife alone!

In 1953, he bought an 18^th century mansion in Switzerland overlooking the Lake Geneva. This was during his Ven-Ven period. Venus is in own nakshatra and closely conjunct Mars (karaka for landed property). Mars disposits Venus in Rasi and Venus disposits Mars in the constellation. Hence, there is a very close sambandha between Venus and Mars. This Mars, Venus conjunction is closely aspected by yogakaraka Saturn who is also the lord of 4^th house (landed property). And, Saturn is in the nakshatra of 12 lord (foreign land) Mercury.

He died peacefully in his sleep around 4:00 am in the morning on December 25, 1977, at the age of 88 years. This date corresponds to vimshottari dasha period of Sun-Ven. Both Sun and Venus occupy the marakasthana, the 7^th house. Venus is also the 8^th lord of longevity. Most importantly, Venus is the lord of 64^th navamsha and Sun occupies the 64^th navamsha. It is well known that the planet associated with 64^th navamsha plays an important role in the longevity of the native.

Steve Jobs fighting Cancer

Steve Jobs is a well known name in the IT industry. He is the co-founder and CEO of Apple Computer Corporation, which manufactures personal computers, iPods, iPads, iPhones etc. He was adopted at the age of 10 though his biological parents were alive. He dropped out of college just after one semester in 1972. He did a lot of odd jobs to earn few dollars and was even getting free food weekly at the local Hare Krishna Temple. However, the growth of his company Apple made him a rich businessman and also brought him lot of popularity due to the innovative products that they produced at Apple. Forbes estimated his networth to be $5.1 billion in 2009.

As I am particularly interested in Medical Astrology, the news item that said that Steve Jobs is suffering from Cancer caught my eye. Since his birth data is rated ‘AA’ by Rodden’s Astrodatabank, it would be interesting to read his horoscope to understand the cause for his health problems.

As I have stated in my earlier article “Micheal Douglas and Throat Cancer”, for cancer, one should look at the combined involvement of Rahu and Jupiter. Jupiter promotes growth and Rahu makes it malign resulting in cancer. Jupiter is retrograde in the chart making it to behave like a functional malefic for him. In addition, it occupies the 11^th house, which is a trishadya house. Placement in the 11^th house may be good for gains but not from the health angle.

The combined effect of Rahu and Jupiter can be seen on both 5H and 11H. Not only that 5H is aspected by Saturn too who is the enemy of the lagna lord Sun. Added to that Mandi sits in 5H, making 5H much seriously afflicted as compared to 11H. It may be noted that Steve is suffering from cancer particularly in the organs related to 5H. The action is mostly in the 5H and not in the 11H as of the two houses 5H is owned by Jupiter. Based on the news, we understand that he has been operated for to remove a tumor in the pancreas and also underwent a lever transplant operation. It may be worthwhile note that both Lever and Pancreas are represented by 5H in the natal chart. Also, the karaka of the pancreas Venus is in 5H conjunct Rahu and aspected by Retro Jupiter, undergoing the combined effect of cancer causing agents Rahu and Jupiter. And, the Karaka for Lever is Jupiter who is conjunct Ketu (karaka for cuts) and its dispositor Mercury is placed in the 6^th house of rogasthana.

It may also be noted that Rahu and Jupiter have a strong influence on Lagna. Firstly, Rahu is in trines to the lagna. Then, Lagna Lord Sun is disposited by Rahu in both Rasi and constellation. In addition, Sun is aspected by retro Jupiter who is conjunct Ketu. And, Lagna Lord Sun moves to 6H in Bhava chart. All these indicate that the native would have poor health. As Jupiter is the 8^th lord, it also indicates that the native might suffer from some chronic health troubles. And, Rahu is the 64^th namvamsha lord from Moon, a qualified maraka.

Let us take a look at the timing of some of the events. He underwent a Surgery in 2004 to remove a pancreatic tumor during Sun-Mars period. The karaka of pancreas Venus is in the nakshatra of Sun. Mars is in the nakshatra of Saturn who aspects Venus in Rasi chart. Venus occupies the 5^th house of pancreas. Then in 2009, he had lever transplant during Sun-Venus period. Karaka for Lever is Jupiter. Venus is disposited by Jupiter and is aspecting Jupiter. The house in focus is again the 5H that represents Lever. It is interesting to note that Venus and Jupiter are in exact opposition, on the same degree. And, Saturn has exact aspect on Venus while Saturn receives exact aspect of Jupiter. Thus all these three planets have a very strong influence on each other.

Rahu in the 5^th might have also given him an innovative mind and the ability to pursue his ideas comes from the conjunct 3^rd lord Venus.

His wife is about 8-9 years younger to him. Please note that Saturn occupying the nakshatra of Moon sits in the UL. And, UL lord Venus is conjunct Rahu. He is currently undergoing Moon dasha and Jupiter Bhukti. The bad news is that Moon occupies a dusthana in Rasi and is debilitated in Navamsha. As Jupiter is the 8^th lord, it would be a tough period for him in the matters of health. As Moon is disposited by Jupiter in Rasi, the impact would be higher.

Leukemia

through the lens of Astrology

Leukemia is one of the most dreaded diseases that human beings are faced with. Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood or bone marrow that is characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells. Leukemia is a broad term covering a spectrum of diseases.

Leukemia is clinically and pathologically subdivided into a variety of large groups. The first division is between its acute and chronic forms:

§ Acute leukemia is characterized by the rapid increase of immature blood cells. This crowding makes the bone marrow unable to produce healthy blood cells. Immediate treatment is required in acute leukemia due to the rapid progression and accumulation of the malignant cells, which then spill over into the bloodstream and spread to other organs of the body. Acute forms of leukemia are the most common forms of leukemia in children.

§ Chronic leukemia is characterized by the excessive build up of relatively mature, but still abnormal, white blood cells. Typically taking months or years to progress, the cells are produced at a much higher rate than normal cells, resulting in many abnormal white blood cells in the blood. Whereas acute leukemia must be treated immediately, chronic forms are sometimes monitored for some time before treatment to ensure maximum effectiveness of therapy. Chronic leukemia mostly occurs in older people, but can theoretically occur in any age group.

It appears that the only difference between the two types is the speed at which the disease progresses. The basic problem still is excessive production of white blood cells in the bone marrow that are not mature enough to do their job.

There are many subtypes as described by medical researchers. But, a broad understanding may be sufficient for astrological purposes. One may refer to Wikipedia for more details on the subject.

Viewing Leukemia through the Astrological lens

There are certain biological factors that can be quickly mapped on to astrological factors here. The karaka for bone marrow is Mars. Though bone marrow is a dhatu and is spread throughout the body, there are specific houses in the chart that are karaka for bone marrow. These are third and sixth houses in the chart. Note that the karaka for these two houses is Mars. The cause of malignity can be attributed to Rahu and Saturn. And, rapid increase or multiplicity can be attributed to karaka Jupiter and the lord of 11 house signifying multiplicity. Jupiter generally believed to bring the blessings. Hence, to promote the disease, it may be necessary for Jupiter to be a functional malefic or afflicted by other malefics in the given chart.

Further, looking at things logically, the maligning factors combined with multiplying factors together should afflict the entities representing bone marrow for making the native susceptible to leukemia. And, one should look at the unfolding dasha bhuktis, which are specific to the native to decide whether the native would actually suffer from Leukemia or not in spite of being susceptible to it. In addition, it may be necessary for lagna/lagna lord to be afflicted for the native to succumb to the disease at a young age.

While checking different horoscopes of people who have suffered from Leukemia, it was observed that it is not necessary for all the three entities representing bone marrow – Mars, 3^rd house/lord and 6^th house/lord to be jointly afflicted by Rahu/Saturn and Jupiter/11^th lord. It may be sufficient if two of the three entities representing bone marrow are afflicted for the disease to show up. If all the three are afflicted, it might be a sure-shot case. When Mars is stronger, it can somewhat fight the onslaught of this affliction. But, if Mars itself is inherently weak or afflicted in the chart, it will not be able to protect the bone marrow from the attack. The same applies to lords of 3^rd house and 6^th house, who also represent bone marrow.

For astrological purposes, different types of leukemia are not looked into, which would demand a deeper research. Following are some of the examples to show the above discussed pattern can be clearly seen in the charts o of people who have died as a result of suffering from Leukemia.

Susan Butcher was an American dog sled racer, a four-time winner of the Iditarod Alaskan Dog Race, a gruelling competitive event. Butcher suffered with a rare blood disorder labelled polycythemia vera (bone marrow producing too many red blood cells). One report said that she had suffered from the disease for at least three years prior to her diagnosis on December 2, 2005 of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). On May 16, 2006, she underwent a bone marrow transplant but her body did not accept the cells, and, on June 28 she was hospitalized with graft-versus-host disease. A month later, on July 25, the leukemia recurred and Butcher succumbed to its ravages. She died at 3:25 PM on August 5, 2006 in a Seattle hospital, age 51.

Sanjay Dutt’s Twins

It was in the news recently that well known film actor Sanjay Dutt became proud father of twins, a girl and a boy. Congratulations to Sanjay and Manyata!

When I saw this news item, I was curious to check-out this case for the conditions that I had specified for twin births in my earlier article titled “Unique features of twins chart”.

The twins were born in Mumbai on Thursday, October 21, 2010. Though exact time of birth was not revealed, it was announced that the birth took place by C-Section between 12:30 and 13:30 hours in the afternoon. This timeframe gives two possibilities for lagna. It could be either Sagittarius lagna or Capricorn lagna, depending on the exact time of birth. However, I have picked Capricorn lagna which satisfies the conditions required for twin birth. With Capricorn lagna, the possible time of birth would after 12:55 hours, within the timeframe announced. Hence, let us assume a tentative time of 13:00 hours to cast the horoscope.

There are three rules identified in a twin’s chart in the above mentioned article. Let us examine them one by one:

[Rule 1]

1. Take a look at the Lagna lord or its dispositor. One of the two following conditions can be seen:

• LL or its dispositor is involved in a Parivartana/Srinkhala either in Rasi or in Constellation, or

• LL or its dispositor disposits its own Rasi dispositor in Constellation (mixed Parivartana?), or

• LL or its dispositor is closely conjunct with its dispositor

In the above chart, Lagna Lord (LL) is Saturn and its dispositor is Mercury. Mercury is conjunct with its dispositor Venus. Hence, the last of the above three conditions is satisfied.

[Rule 2]

2. Lord of 11th house (representing multiplicity) or the karaka of 11th house Jupiter influences Lagna or Lagna Lord by ownership or by conjunction or by graha drishti.

In the above chart, Jupiter, the karaka for 11th house is aspecting the LL Saturn. Hence, this condition is also satisfied.

[Rule 3]

3. For the twins to be identical, one of the following conditions should be satisfied:

• The 3rd lord and 11th lord are in close conjunction, hardly 1 degree apart! (or it could be within the same nakshatra pada), or

• There is a Parivartana/Srinkhala between the 3rd lord and the 11th lord either in Rasi or in Constellation.

In the above chart, 3L is Jupiter who is in his own sign and 11L is Mars who is also in its own sign. Hence, they are not involved in any parivartana or Srinkhala in Rasi. Even in constellation, they are not involved in such a relationship. Hence, the twins are not identical. As one baby is a boy and the other is a girl, it is evident that they are not identical and they are only fraternal.

It is heartening to see that the three rules identified for twin charts are fully applicable in this particular case too.

Michael Douglas

and his

Throat Cancer

Michael Douglas is in the news of late for a sad reason. He is suffering from cancer, particularly from throat cancer. He had an illustrious career in Hollywood for the past 40 odd years and has own the Oscar award both as an actor and as a producer. He has also won many more awards for his acting abilities. He is happily married with a beautiful and understanding wife Catherine Zeta-Jones who is also a big star in Hollywood. He has three children one from the first marriage and two from the second. When people were thinking that he has everything that a man should have, he has stepped into this bad phase of throat cancer. It seems to have resulted from his smoking habit as doctors say that 9 of 10 throat caner patients are either smokers or ex-smokers. People who have quit smoking even 20 years ago also seem to have the risk of getting throat cancer.

Since his birth data is rated ‘AA’ by Rodden, it would be interesting to read his horoscope for the current problem and see how it would turn around in the future.

For cancer, one should look at the combined involvement of Rahu and Jupiter. Jupiter promotes growth and Rahu makes it malign resulting in cancer. Jupiter is a functional malefic in the chart as it is the lord of the third and the sixth, also placed in the 11^th. Placement in the 11^th may be good for gains but not from the health angle. Rahu has just moved out of Leo into Cancer and Jupiter is in Leo. This means that Rahu has some trailing effect on Jupiter. Even otherwise, Rahu occupies the nakshatra of Jupiter who is also the lord of the 6^th. Hence, Rahu becomes potent to cause health problems and specially caner kind of problems. One should look for the house both Rahu and Jupiter have their influence. It may not be apparent from the Rasi chart. However, Bhava chart shown below clearly shows that the combined effect of Rahu and Jupiter falls on third Bhava.

Here, third Bhava is in Rahu-Ketu axis and is aspected by both Saturn and Jupiter. Though Saturn is a Yogakraka for this chart, unfortunately, Saturn is not only conjunct Rahu it is also in the nakshatra of Rahu. Hence, it will only assist Rahu to cause its malefic influence. It may be noticed that the combined effect of Jupiter and Rahu can be seen on the 5^th house also. The third house represents throat and the fifth house represents stomach. But, his smoking habit has added to the problem in affecting the throat. Added to this, there is also the malefic influence of Mandi on the third house/throat. And, to top it all, maraka Mars aspects the third house from the 12^th house. Overall, it can be clearly seen that third house/throat is under severe malefic influence from Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mandi and Mars.

His vimshottari dasha sequence indicates that he is currently undergoing Jup-Sat-Ven. It appears that the cancer might have got triggered during the early times of Jup-Sat period that started during May 2009.

Another important aspect of his life is that both his wives are much younger in age to him. Even his first wife, Diandra Luker, is 14 years younger to him, who divorced him in the year 2000. And he married Catherine in the same year who is 25 years younger to him. This author has written another article titled “When big age difference with partner does not matter”. It is interesting to see that this native’s chart has the characteristics defined in this article. In such cases, it has been stated that there will be good influence of Moon, Rahu and Saturn on UL/UL Lord. In this case, Moon is the UL lord, Rahu occupies UL (Rasi) and Saturn aspects UL lord Moon. Rahu also aspects UL lord Moon. His first marriage was in Moon-Sat period and the second was in Rahu-Ven period showing clear involvement of Saturn, Moon and Rahu in the events.

Coming back to his cancer, what does the future foretell? He is currently undergoing a critical period of Jup-Sat. Jupiter is the 6^th lord of diseases and also sits in the 64^th Navamsha. And, Saturn is the lord of the 22^nd drekkana. No doubt this is the most dangerous period in his life. This period lasts until November 2011. The next period of Jup-Mer is also critical as three malefics Rahu, Saturn and Mars are disposited by Mercury. Hence, going forward the times are difficult for Michael. Let us pray that God gives him the strength to cope up with the troubled times.

Bandhana Yoga

for

It was in the news recently that Gujarat Home Minister has been taken into custody by the CBI on July 25, 2010. Soon, his birth details were on circulation in the astrology discussion groups on the net. One can never be sure whether these details are accurate or not. But, it would be interesting to see whether such an event could be explained using his horoscope. If such an event could be explained, probably the birth details are accurate.

Long before, an article was published on this site on “Bandhana Yoga” in detail. One could refer to that get the technicalities covering this Yoga. This article attempts to see whether such a yoga exists in the chart of the native based on those principles presented before.

The birth details available on the internet are as follows:

DOB: October 22, 1964

TOB: 5:20 hrs

POB: Mumbai

Just to briefly mention the Yoga, the lagna lord and 6^th lords should occupy a Kendra or kona, 6^th lord should afflict the lagna lord and one of Rahu, Ketu or Saturn should afflict both the lagna lord and the sixth lord. In addition, the event will unfold during appropriate dasha bhuktis of the planets thus involved.

In this chart, the Bandhana Yoga can be seen from the Moon sign.

Lord of Moon sign: Mars

Lord of the 6^th from the Moon Sign: Mercury

Both Mars and Mercury occupy Kendras from Moon. This one of the conditions required for the yoga.

The nakshatra lord Mars is Mercury. That way Mercury afflicts Mars. Moreover, Mars itself is deeply debilitated and aspects Mercury in turn in Rasi. Clearly, there is a good sambandha between Mars and Mercury.

Rahu, one of the three malefics cited in the definition afflicts both Mars and Mercury. Mercury is in trines to Rahu and Mars is in the 12^th house from the direction of Rahu’s movement. Rahu leaves a trail in its previous sign and hence has its influence on that sign too. In addition, Mercury is in the nakshatra of Rahu.

The Vimshottari dasha sequence of the date of the event is as follows:

Rah-Sat-Sun

This period starts on July 20, 2010 and the native was taken into custody on July 25, 2010.

The involvement of Rahu is pretty clear. Saturn plays his role for two reasons, i) it is in Aquarius, a sign co-lorded by Rahu, ii) Saturn is in trines to Rahu and hence will be clearly influenced by Rahu. Sun’s involvement can also be explained with two reasons – i) Sun is closely conjunct the 6^th lord (from Moon) Mercury and, ii) Sun is in the nakshatra of Mars who is the sufferer here. Thus Sun connects both Mars and Mercury.

After Rah-Sat, it will be Rah-Mer, a period which not favourable to the native as Mercury is involved in the Bandhana Yoga. It appears that it will be a while before the native breaths the air of freedom. However, it is still not possible to establish accurately the astrological criteria for release from confinement.

Krishna’s BTR Technique
Applied to Multiple Births

Every time a new Jyotish technique is offered, it is a challenge to show that the same technique works in the case of multiple births as well. If the technique is sound, it should work well for multiple births also. This article demonstrates the same for the BTR technique offered earlier.

In another post, Krishna’s BTR technique has been explained in detail. It might be difficult to follow this article unless the technique is understood first.

While applying this technique for individual births, it has been demonstrated that the Lagna gets aligned to the best placed planet in the chart. Logically, one might think that for multiple births, the Lagna for each baby gets aligned to the best, 2nd best, 3rd best… placed planets depending on whether they are twins, triplets… etc. This author also had a similar expectation. And, that indeed was found to be true! It is interesting to note that the Lagna for the first baby gets aligned to the best placed planet; the Lagna for the second baby gets aligned to the second best placed planet and so on depending on the number of babies in a single pregnancy. It is really amazing to observe this fascinating truth!

With this additional note, Krishna’s BTR technique that is applicable for individual births is also applicable for multiple births as well without any change.

Here, no attempt has been made to pick a different set of examples for demonstrating the applicability of Krishna’s BTR technique for multiple births. Bulk of the examples used here are the same ones that were used to demonstrate another theory on twin births in one of the earlier
article.

The last example of Octuplets is a must read for those who are keen on understanding this technique of Birth Time Rectification. The full essence of the technique can be seen in that as the Lagna gets aligned with all the 8 planets to get the rectified birth times for all the 8 babies, within a span of just 5 minutes!

Here, Mars undergoes Parivartana with Sun in Rasi. As a result, Mars behaves like a Vargottama in its own Sign. Though this does not give a Vargottama status (as Mercury GOes to two different signs), Mercury behaves as if it is in its own sign in both Rasi and Navamsha. This status appears to be better than that of rest of the planets except Mars. Hence, Mercury takes the second spot.

Aligning the Lagna with Mars, the rectified birth time for the first baby is 9:52:34.9 as against the recorded time of 9:50 hrs.

Aligning the Lagna with Mercury, the rectified birth time for the second baby is 10:03:26.7 as against the recorded time of 10:05 hrs.

Aligning the Lagna with Jupiter, the rectified birth time of the first baby is 18:35:26.4 as against a recorded birth time of 18:27 hrs.

Aligning the Lagna with Moon, the rectified birth time of the second baby is 18:37:05 as against a recorded birth time of 18:28 hrs.

The difference between rectified and recorded times seem to be a bit on the higher side in this case, possibly either due to either inaccurate clock or inefficient recording.

These triplets were born just 5 days after the Lopez twins. Here the actual birth times of the babies are not published. The published information says that the deliveries happened around 3pm. It would be interesting to see what might be the actual birth times for each of the three babies.

The top 2 planets are Venus and Jupiter. Though Jupiter gets the top spot by virtue of being in its own sign, it should be noted that the Sahdbala of Jupiter is below par, it is only 92% of the minimum required to consider it as strongly placed. These twins were born via a gestational carrier – a woman who carries another couple's baby conceived by the parents' own egg and sperm. The babies did not develop in the womb of their biological mother and not delivered by their biological mother. As it is a special scenario, this case would be interesting to study.

Though Sun is in debilitation sign in Rasi, it has crossed the deep point of debilitation by a good distance. Hence, it is not considered as debilitated. It is also exalted in Navamsha.

Ideally, Sun should take the top spot and Rahu should take the second spot. However, both these planets don’t offer any alignment to the Lagna in the vicinity of the recorded birth times! This example does not fall in place. Hence, this requires further investigation. This will be taken up subsequently.

However, it is interesting to note that there are two planets Jupiter and Saturn that provide alignment to the Lagna around the recorded times:

Aligning the Lagna with Jupiter, the rectified birth time for the first baby is 8:30:36 as against a recorded birth time of 8:26 hrs.

Aligning the Lagna with Saturn, the rectified birth time for the second baby is 8:31:29.7 as against a recorded birth time of 8:28 hrs.

This is definitely a puzzling case and warrants further investigation.

Barclay twins are famous business tycoons and millionaire twins in UK. They work in background and they did not allow publicly being photographed since 1983!

The best placed planet is Rahu as each of the other planets are tainted for one or the other reason. In the second best category we have Moon and Saturn both are indirectly affected as they disposit DB planets in Navamsha. Between the two, Saturn fares better as it occupies its own sign in Rasi where as Moon is in a Neutral sign. Also, Saturn has better Shadbala. Hence, the second best would be Saturn.

Aligning the Lagna with Rahu, the rectified birth time for David Barclay is 17:57:18.68 as against a recorded birth time of 18:00 hrs.

Aligning the Lagna with Saturn, the rectified birth time for Frederick Barclay is 18:08:28.92 as against a recorded birth time of 18:10 hrs.

H. Bellflower Octuplets

Actually, in the case of Octuplets, the Lagna should get aligned to all the 8 planets! It is also possible that it need not get aligned with all the planets if it can have more than one alignment with one more planets in the given time frame. In this case, the time frame was very stringent as all the eight babies were born within a span of 5 minutes! The first baby was reported to born at 10:43 hrs. The chart is cast for this time.

Both Mars and Mercury are Vargottams. But Mars is better placed as it is Vargottama in CF’s sign and Mercury is Vargottama in FR’s sign. Both of them are in Graha Yuddha as well and Mercury appears to have won the War.

For the first baby, the Lagna is expected to get an alignment with Mars, though it is slightly affected by losing Graha Yuddha.

Next is Mercury as it is Vargottama in a friendly sign.

Exaltation placement of Sun in Navamsha should be ignored as it is placed in BE sign in Rasi. Third place should go to Rahu as Rahu is EXN and placed in a NU sign in Rasi.

The last two spots will be taken up by Moon (7th) and Jupiter (8th) as they are severely combust, Moon being the better of the two.

Now, among the remaining three planets, their ranking (4th, 5th and 6th) between Venus, Sun and Saturn should be determined. Venus is placed in NU few slots above Sun and Sat who are in BE. Hence, Venus should get the 4th spot, Sun the 5th (higher Shadbala than Saturn) and Saturn should get the 6th spot.

Hence, the ranking of the planets based on their placements is as follows:

Looking at the rectified birth times and the corresponding planets that the Lagna gets aligned to, it appears that Saturn and Rahu seem to have swapped their places. All others are in the right order. Knowing the affinity with each other (Sanivad Rahu) and considering the fact that Rahu is disposited by Saturn, this kind of swapping should not be a surprise.

Conclusion

It is evident from the above examples that the BTR theory proposed is very well applicable to multiple births also.

It is not a coincidence that it was possible to align the Lagna with all the eight planets within a span of 5 minutes and also get the ranking of the planets reasonably right in the Octuplets case. It is a tough test case and the success there gives a big thumps up to the technique proposed beyond any doubt!

Even if a planet is the strongest in the chart, it should not be picked for rectification if such a planet is placed in the 12th house from lagna. In such cases, next best planet should be picked for rectification. In case of multiple births, this rule is applicable to only the first child. For subsequent children planets in the 12th house can also be considered.

A note on placement of planets at Rasi sandhi

- When a planet is in Rasi Sandhi, it becomes weak if it is less than 1 degree from the sandhi. However, such a weakness is overcome when the same planet is in vargottama state.

- In case the sandhi is a Gandanta Sandhi, such planets should be considered weak upto 3 degrees from the Gandanta Sandhi. And, even when a planet is vargottama when close to a Gandanta sandhi should be considered weak.

This is an endeavour to find the mathematical harmony that Swami Yukteswar is talking about, in the above statement. It is widely understood that the individual karmas manifest through the influence of the nine ‘grahas’ on the native. And, in a horoscope, Lagna or Ascendant in a horoscope acts similar to the needle that is pointing to North in a compass. It is very likely that the Lagna in a horoscope also points exactly to a specific ‘graha’ or planet in the chart. If we are able to determine what it is pointing to, it would be possible to accurately align Lagna to that planet and in the process we could rectify the birth time recording errors and arrive at the actual time of birth. This is the philosop hy behind the research undertaken. This author strongly believes that for a human birth to take place there has to be some well defined relationship between the position of Lagna and that of one of the planets in the chart. The search for an answer began with this assumption and the result is presented here.

After assuming that Lagna is aligned to one particular planet in the chart, a question arises as to what are the criteria to determine that particular planet. Obviously, this planet should standout on some important ground. In Astrology, we have many parameters and many different scales to compare the relative strengths of different planets. After some study, it has been observed that how well a planet is placed in a chart emerges as the determining criteria. When a planet is most comfortably placed as compared to other planets, that planet is regarded as the best placed planet. And, Lagna gets aligned to that planet.

As each sign is owned by a certain planet and the state of another planet placed there depends on how it relates to the owner of that sign. Hence, one should look at the nature of friendship between planets to determine whether a planet is placed well or not.

Determination of Compound Relationships between planets

One should go by the compound relationship between the planets. BPHS[1] states that all planets placed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses from a planet are its temporary friends. If we think about the reasoning behind such a proposition, it is apparent that planets become temporary enemies when they are very close to each other (as their rays interfere with each others) or when they are far away from each other (as their rays oppose each others). It appears that this rule is purely based on simple Physics rather than anything else. Normally, astrologers look at the houses mentioned above and take all planets present in those relative positions as temporary friends. Keeping the spirit of the concept, this author humbly proposes a slightly different interpretation of what has been said in BPHS as against what is commonly followed. It is proposed that, if two planets have a longitudinal distance greater than 15 degrees and less than 105 degrees between them (irrespective of the signs they occupy), they should be considered as te mporary friends. Here, there is no violation from the essence of what is said in BPHS. The definition for permanent friendships followed here is exactly same as what is given in BPHS. The compound relationship is the resultant of permanent and temporary relationships:

Order Of Importance

From the above table, we can conclude that a planet placed in the sign of a Close Friend is better placed than a planet placed in the sign of any other compound relationship. However, there are even better placements for a planet than this. Following is a list of placements ordered from best to worst:

Note: When a Planet is retrograde, it would be approaching its deepest point of exaltation/debilitation only when it is placed beyond that point.

Treating for Planets in Parivartana/Srinkhala[2]

There is one very important concept that affects the determination of how a planet is placed in a chart. It is very important to check if a planet is either in Parivartana or in Srinkhala and apply necessary adjustments. In the experience of this author, a planet which has undergone Parivartana/Srinkhala behaves as if it is placed in its own sign (the sign that has participated in Parivartana/Srinkhala). Except for considering combustion and effects of other conjunctions and aspects, for other purposes, such a planet should be treated as if it is in its own sign. As a result of Parivartana/Srinkhala a planet is entitled for two different placements, one in the house actually placed and the other the resultant own house. That planet should be assigned the better of the two placements. Hence, a planet debilitated but in Parivartana should be assigned a ‘GO’ (Goes to Own) placement while a planet exalted and in Parivartana/Srinkhala should be assigned ‘EX’ placement.

However, one should note that more the planets in Srinkhala, less the effectiveness of Parivartana. A three planet Srinkhala should be definitely considered while a Srinkhala involving more than three planets could be ignored.

Strength of Vargottama

It is a well known fact in Jyotish that a planet gets special strength when it is a Vargottama (occupying same sign in Rasi and Navamsha). However, it has been observed that even when a planet is Vargottama based on the above definition, the planet may not necessarily have sufficient strength to act like a Vargottama. It has been observed that the strength is highest (or 100%) when a planet occupies the same degree in the same sign both in Rasi and Navamsha. If the difference is more, the strength is less. For the purposes of this methodology, a planet should have at least around 40% strength to be considered as a Vargottama. Otherwise, its Vargottama status may be ignored. Following formula may be used to calculate this percentage:

%Vargottama Strength = (30 – (diff in longitudes in Rasi & Navamsha))*100/30

Samagama

When a planet is within 1 degree from the Moon, it is said to be in Samagama (union) with the Moon. A planet in samagama becomes very strong. This is probably because Moon fully relays all the rays on that planet on to the earth. Though it is still being conteplated whether such a strength would place such a planet above or below an exalted or vargottama planet, the purpose of putting this up is to remind the astrologers to keep this planet also in the reconning as one of the strong contenders, unless otherwise that planet is weak due to other conditions that makes it weak.

Checking Some Important Conditions

1. Planets placed in a Rasi Sandhi or Gandanta are considered to be weak (except when Vargottama) irrespective of their placement status. Even the planets disposited by planets in Rasi Sandhi should be ignored unless they are extremely strong like being Vargottama.
2. If a planet is debilitated (either in Rasi or in Navamsha) or closely conjunct a debilitated planet (within an orb of about 6 degrees) or even if it disposits a debilitated planet (either in Rasi or in Navamsha), then one should not take it into the reckoning (unless the debilitated planet is under Parivartana/Srinkhala). Only Exalted or Vargottama planets should be kept in the reckoning even if they are tainted by debilitated planets.
3. A planet exalted in Navamsha that has a lesser status in Rasi should be given a status EXN. Entire sign in Navamsha is fine, no need to look at specific degrees.
4. Those planets which are more than 50% combust should be ignored. One should not disqualify Mercury even when it is deeply combust. And, the planets that are disposited by such combust planets should also be ignored.
5. Ketu by default should be left out as its placement depends on placement of Rahu. Hence, there are only eight planets in the race including Rahu. For Rahu, Taurus should be considered as the sign of exaltation and Scorpio should be considered as the sign of debilitation. Rahu owns Aquarius and Ketu Scorpio. This comes handy while checking Parivartana/Srinkhala.

Care should be taken to verify all such conditions that make a planet weak and ensure that the planet considered is well placed in all respects.

Determining The Best Placed Planet

After filtering the planets for all their negative qualities, one should look for the planets in the following categories (in that order of importance) rejecting the others and also rejecting those with other blemishes (as described in the above paragraph):

1. Vargottama (VG(EX), VG(MT), VG(OW))
2. Exaltation (EX)
3. Moola Trikona (MT)
4. Vargottama VG(Others)
5. Exalted in Navamsha (EXN) (not in DB, BE or EN in Rasi)
6. Own (OW)
7. In CF
8. In FR
9. In NU
10. In EN
11. In BE
12. DB
13. In Rasi Sandhi
14. Severely Combust

One should first look for planets in the number 1 category, if none found, then look for the next best category etc., and reach the best placed planet. Some points to note before finalizing the best placed planet:

If there are two or more planets in the same top category, the best of them should be determined by comparing their Shadbala.
If none of the planets fall in the qualifying categories, then look for planets closely influencing lagna.
When a planet’s Shadbala is relatively much higher as compared to that of any other planet, this planet also becomes a contender.
When a planet's shadbala is below Par (below 100%), it should be disqualified unless it is very strong otherwise.

When two planets are in Graha Yuddha[3], there is no consensus on the resolution of the criteria to determine the winner. As a result, there could be some errors in the calculation of Shadbala of those planets. Also, Graha Yuddha should be considered only between the five non-luminous physical planets. There are other considerations which could affect the Shadbala calculations. In such conditions, relying fully on the Shadbala could cause problems.

All such cases should be studied carefully as it is difficult draw a clear line.

Even if a planet is the strongest in the chart, it should not be picked for rectification, if such a planet is placed in the 12th house from lagna. In such cases, next best planet should be picked for rectification. In case of multiple births, this rule is applicable to only the first child. For subsequent children planets in the 12th house can also be considered.

Aligning Lagna with the Best Placed Planet

Here comes hitherto unknown bit. This might appear a bit strange to some. But, this has been proposed after testing numerous charts for the accuracy of birth time.

This step can not be easily done without using software as this is a highly iterative process. This author has used JHora. It could be performed using any software that gives nakshatra-lord, sub-lord, sub-sub-lord…. table for all the planets like the one in JHora. In JHora, this is found by clicking the ‘KP’ tab at the right bottom on the default screen. One will see the information like below:

The time that gives an alignment that is closest to the given/recorded birth time should be considered as the rectified birth time.

Normally, in case of well documented births, such an alignment is seen within a couple of minutes from the recorded birth time. If not, following three situations are possible:

a. There is an error in identifying the best placed planet, or
b. The given birth time is grossly erroneous, or
c. Could be a rare case that fails this theory (needs a closer look)

The truth of this fact is demonstrated taking examples of some of the well recorded birth details of famous personalities. The given examples could be studied to understand the procedure better as well as a proof that Lagna always points to the best placed planet in the chart. That is the time when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony resulting in a human birth.

Applicability & Advantages of this method

This method is applicable for the final fine-tuning of the birth time when birth time is available within a range of few minutes from the time of actual birth, or when a hospital record is available which invariably would have some variation due to recording errors.
The advantage of this method is that there is no need to cast a Prashna chart, or there is no need to know some important events in the life of the native, and there is no need to drill through many divisional charts and fine-tune them based on the events in the native’s life. The method of fine-tuning poses inherent traps as it calls for a very good knowledge of delineating divisional charts. This method uses the available birth details and looks for the mathematical harmony between Lagna and another entity in the chart. Hence, is prone to less errors.
Use of incorrect Ayanamsha could create problems. It should be noted that in some charts, the Navamsha placement of planets when on the border are sensitive to small changes in Ayanamsha and this could hijack the end result.

More than 150 charts with well recorded birth times have been tested to see if such an alignment between the Lagna and the best placed planet exists around the given time of birth. There were only handful of misses and the success rate is exceptional.

This is a very interesting case to study using the proposed method of Birth Time Rectification. The reason being that there are different views on the correct birth time within a narrow range of about half an hour and it would be interesting to check what the result of rectification indicates.

The second of the above three times is used cast the chart as it is the near average. In any case, nothing much changes in Navamsha for all the three times except Navamsha Lagna which is not relevant to the method being used.

Jupiter and Moon both are in their own sign in Rasi and they are in Srinkhala in Navamsha (Moon-Jup-Sun). Hence, they both behave like Vargottama planets in their own sign. As there is a tie between them, Shadbala comes into picture. Clearly, Moon has a much higher Shadbala than that of Jupiter and hence Moon is picked as the best placed planet in this chart.

Looking at the above combination, one can see that out of the three possible alignments, only one is likely if the given time-frame is +/- 30 minutes from the assumed time, which is aligning Nakshatra lord of Lagna with Sub-lord of Moon. For any other alignment to take place, the rectified time undergoes a drastic change.

It is clear from this example that in case of small errors in recorded birth time, this approach shows the way to narrow down to the likely correct birth time.

Conclusion

The above examples demonstrate that there is a clear affinity between Lagna and the best placed planet in the chart. Hence, it is appropriate to conclude that the correct birth time is when the Lagna is perfectly aligned to the best placed planet in the chart.

Extending the scope of this study

It is always challenging to apply any Jyotish principle to a twin’s chart and verify it. As the news of octuplets birth was breaking, it was indeed interesting to see how to apply this theory for such births. The birth details are as follows:

January 26, 2009 between 10:43 and 10:48 hrs, at Bellflower, California, USA.

It was highly exciting to see that 8 alignments (one with each of the 8 planets) were available in a span of just 5 minutes, roughly between 10:39 and 10:44! It is really very rare to get so many alignments in such a short span of time. Anyone who looks into this would understand that availability of 8 alignments to the Lagna in a span of only 5 minutes is not just a co-incidence. Though this theory has not been tested over a large number of twins’ charts yet, this author believes that the principle given above could be successfully applied to twins’ (multiple births) charts as well.

Srinkhala

Over the years of my Jyotish journey, I have realized that Srinkhala is a very important concept and also one of the least understood and least used concepts in Jyotish analysis. I struggled to find any classical references to it or even a small commentary on it over the internet. However, I was disappointed. Over the Yahoo groups, many people have asked me to explain what ‘Srinkhala’ is whenever they see me using this term in my analysis/comments on a chart. Hence, I decided to put together my understanding of this for the benefit of other students of Jyotish.

‘Srinkhala’ in Sanskrit literally means ‘Chain’ that is made up of ‘links’. The terminology is very apt as it is really a chain made of three or more planets (links) that can be seen in astrological charts. And this chain is not an open ended one, it is always closed ended forming a loop. To put it very simply, Srinkhala is a younger sister of Parivartana. Parivartana is a better known concept and yet not effectively used in delineating charts. There is not much difference in delineating a chart using either Parivartana or Srinkhala. There are two main differences between them – 1. Parivartana is stronger than Srinkhala, 2. Parivartana involves only two planets and Srinkhala involves more than 2 planets. For example if in a chart, if Venus occupies Sagittarius and Jupiter occupies Libra, it is said that Venus and Jupiter are in Parivartana occupying each others signs. This is understood by most students of Jyotish. Extending this concept further, consider that Venus is in Sagittarius, Jupiter is in Scorpio and Mars in Libra. Here, Venus is disposited by Jupiter which is disposited by Mars which disposited Venus, closing the loop of a chain of dispositions. This is Srinkhala involving three planets – Venus, Jupiter and Mars. If two planets are in Parivartana, it is as good as they are closely conjunct and also the two houses they occupy also get connected to each other through this energy bond. And, both the planets also influence their own sign (that is part of Parivartana) through this bond. Probably, in a Srinkhala of three planets, one could consider that all the three planets aspect each other as the strength of the bond between planets gets reduced with the addition of one more planet. And, all the planets influence their won sign as well like in Parivartana, possibly to a lesser extent.

To compare the strengths of Parivartana and Srinkhala, one could give an analogy of a couple in love. Parivartana is analogous to the couple, the two planets having a strong bond between them. Srinkhala comes into picture when one more member gets added to the family (say they get a lovely child). Now, it is a family of three closely knit together. However, the intensity of bond between the members has reduced now as it has to be shared with one more member (assuming that the resources are limited and strength of each bonding with any member is the same). When one more member is added to this family, the bond though exists between members, gets weakened further. Hence, if the strength of the bond in Parivartana is 100, the strength of the bond in a three planet Srinkhala is 50, the strength of the bond in a 4 planet Srinkhala is around 33 and the strength of the bond in a 5 planet Srinkhala is 25. Hence, it is best to consider only a 3 planet Srinkhala in a chart for delineating purposes; and ignore the same if there are more planets involved as the effect of Srinkhala is not considerable.

The concept could probably be better understood though an example. Following is a chart of Roger Federer, a Tennis Champion. He is born in a small city called Basel in Switzerland. This Rasi chart has a Srinkhala between three planets, namely Sun, Moon and Venus.

The houses involved in Srinkhala are 1st, 3rd and 12th. Hence, one can see an excellent co-ordination between his hands and legs making him a great Tennis player, very difficult to beat.

The three planets Sun, Moon and Venus will behave as if they are placed in their own signs. Hence, they should be considered as strongly placed in the chart as Sun loses its blemish of being placed in the 12th, and Moon loses the blemish being approaching its point of deepest fall.

As Lagna lord Sun is strongly connected to two female planets, a touch of femininity could be seen in his looks. That might also add to his high emotional quotient.

Unique features of a twin's chart

Charts of twins have challenged astrologers since ages. It has been observed that many twins have lived quite different lives over time. People talk about looking into either varga charts or cuspal links to understand the differences in their charts as well as in their lives. However, the focus of this research is not on that but something even more basic. The purpose was to check if the planets leave any specific foot-prints in the charts of twins. Some basic questions that came up were – what are the special characteristics of a twin’s natal chart? Is it possible to know through astrology whether the twins are identical or fraternal? and what the sex of the babies could be? The search for answers began. What was found may not necessarily be the complete blueprint of a twin’s chart. At the same time, it is believed that some clear watermarks could be found in such charts.

Before looking at the charts of twins, let us first look at what twins are and the types that we generally come across. The following information was gathered from Wikipedia[1]:

Twins are two offspring’s resulting from the same pregnancy, either of the same or opposite sex. Mainly there are three types of twins:

1. Fraternal twins (commonly known as "non-identical twins") usually occur when two fertilized eggs are implanted in the uterine wall at the same time. Fraternal twins, like any other siblings, have an extremely small chance of having the exact same chromosome profile. Like any other siblings, fraternal twins may look very similar, particularly given that they are the same age. However, fraternal twins may also look very different from each other. They may be different sexes or the same sex. The same holds true for brothers and sisters from the same parents, meaning that fraternal twins are simply brothers and/or sisters who happen to have the same age. They may or may not have the same blood type.
2. Identical Twins occur when a single egg is fertilized to form one zygote (monozygotic) which then divides into two separate embryos. Their traits and physical appearances are not exactly the same; although they have identical DNA, environmental conditions both inside the womb and throughout their lives influence the switching on & off of various genes. Rarely, the zygote may split extremely late, resulting in conjoined twins. Monozygotic twins are genetically identical (unless there has been a mutation in development) and they are usually the same sex and same blood type.
3. Semi-Identical Twins are hypothesized to occur when an unfertilized egg cleaves into two identical attached ova and which are viable for fertilization. Both cloned ova are then fertilized by different sperm and the coalesced eggs undergo further cell duplications developing as a chimeric blastomere. If this blastomere then undergoes a twinning event, two embryos will be formed, each of which have different paternal genes and identical maternal genes. This results in a set of twins with identical genes from the mother's side, but different genes from the father's side. They may or may not have the same blood type. This is a rare phenomenon.
As it is too difficult to get charts of Semi-identical twins, no attempt to study that category has been made. The main question was - What are the unique features of a twin birth? Definitely, the following points are of prime importance –
a) For the baby, sharing mother’s womb with another life simultaneously and
b) Also a multiplicity factor that comes into play.

For the part a) The Ascendant (lagna) Lord (LL) and its disposition was looked into. For the part b) 11th lord or Jupiter’s (karaka of 11th house) influence on Lagna/LL was looked into.

Also, other questions popped up - is it possible to tell whether the twins are Identical or Fraternal by looking at the chart? And, is it possible to identify the sexes of the twins? The last question remains unanswered.

After studying considerable number of charts, the following combinations started emerging in the charts of twins:

1. Take a look at the Lagna lord or its dispositor. One of the two following conditions can be seen: [Rule 1]

LL or its dispositor is involved in a Parivartana/Srinkhala[2] either in Rasi or in Constellation, or
LL or its dispositor disposits its own Rasi dispositor in Constellation (mixed Parivartana?), or
LL or its dispositor is closely conjunct with its dispositor (this condition has been modified after the publication)

[Rule 2]
2. Lord of 11th house (representing multiplicity) or the karaka of 11th house Jupiter influences Lagna or Lagna Lord by ownership or by conjunction or by graha drishti.

It was observed that both the above factors are invariably found in all twin’s charts.

Special Feature of Identical Twin’s chart

Identical twins share an exceptionally special relationship with each other. Since they are made of the same egg and the same sperm, they share the closest relationship as compared to other siblings or even other types of twins. Here, for the native, the other twin is a younger sibling and an elder sibling both rolled into one! This is because; there is absolutely no time difference in the conception of the two. It would have happened exactly at the same moment. One expected to see a very close relationship between 3rd lord and 11th lord and indeed it was there! You would find one of the following conditions in the identical twins charts:

The 3rd lord and 11th lord are in close conjunction, hardly 1 degree apart! (or it could be within the same nakshatra pada), or
There is a Parivartana/Srinkhala between the 3rd lord and the 11th lord either in Rasi or in Constellation.

Though we found a few pointers to determine the sex of the twins, we are not sharing that technique here as the results were not very consistent. Let us now examine below some examples which demonstrate the existence of the combinations that has been suggested earlier for charts of twins.

A. Twins of Jennifer Lopez[3]

1. Lagna lord is Venus and its dispositor is Saturn. Saturn is in Parivartana with Sun. [Rule 1]
2. Lagna is in the constellation of Jupiter (multiplicity). [Rule 2]
3. Type of twins: Fraternal - as there is no close relationship is observed between 3rd lord Jupiter and 11th lord Sun. [Rule 3]

B. Penn Triplets[4]

Allison Penn gave birth to three identical boys during February 2008 in Long Island City, New York, USA. Dr. Victor Klein implanted only one embryo which split in two, followed by one half splitting again. This is the first instance of such an occurrence known in the history of American medicine, according to the doctor. According to the doctor, delivery took place around 3pm and all the births happened in quick succession. We use this time to look at the chart.

1. Lagna Lord is Moon and its dispositor is Mars. These are not in Parivartana/Srinkhala in Rasi. However Moon-Jupiter-Venus are in Srinkhala in the constellation. [Rule 1]
2. 11th lord Venus (multiplicity) aspects Lagna [Rule 2]
3. Type of twins: Identical as here 3rd lord Mercury and the 11th lord Venus are conjunct on the same degree (Capricorn 18)! [Rule 3]

C. Dennis Quaid Twins[5]

1. Lagna Lord is Mars and its dispositor is Mercury. Mercury is in Parivartana with Venus. [Rule 1]
2. Jupiter (karaka for multiplicity) occupies Lagna. [Rule 2]
3. Type of twins: Fraternal as there is no close relationship between 3rd lord Saturn and 11th lord Mercury [Rule 3]

D. Cynthia Watros Twins[6]

1. Lagna Lord is Jupiter and its dispositor is Mercury. Jupiter and Mercury are closely conjunct (only 2.5 degrees apart) [Rule 1]
2. Lagna is in the constellation of 11th lord Saturn (multiplicity) [Rule 2]
3. Type of twins: Identical as there 3rd lord Venus and 11th lord Saturn are closely conjunct on the same degree (Taurus 16)! [Rule 3]

E. Bush Twins[7]

1. Lagna lord is Jupiter and its dispositor is Venus. Venus is in parivartana with Jupiter. [Rule 1]
2. 11th lord Venus (denoting multiplicity) occupies Lagna. Also, Lagna is in the constellation of 11th Lord Venus. [Rule 2]
3. Type of Twins: Fraternal as there is no close relationship between 3rd lord Saturn and 11th lord Venus [Rule 3]

F. Hall Twins[8]

1. Lagna Lord is Mercury and its dispositor is Venus. Venus-Mars-Moon are in Srinkhala in Rasi. [Rule 1]
2. Lagna is in the constellation of 11th lord Moon (multiplicity) [Rule 2]
3. Type of twins: Identical as there 3rd lord Mars and11th lord Moon are in Srinkhala [Rule 3]

F. Jolie-Pitt Twins[9]

This one is the latest, well known twin birth. Please observe the following features of the chart:

1. The co-lord of lagna, Ketu, is disposited by Moon. Moon is in Parivartana with Venus. [Rule 1] Also, the other co-lord Mars is in Srinkhala with its constellation dispositor in constellation itself (Ket-Mer-Rah-Mar).
2. The Lagna falls in the constellation of 11th lord Mercury [Rule 2]
3. Type of Twins: Fraternal as there is no close relationship between 3rd lord Saturn and 11th lord Mercury [Rule 3]

From the above examples it is clearly evident that - what are some of the important signatures in a twin’s chart and how to identify whether the twins are identical or fraternal. Not only these, we have verified many other twin charts shared by friendly astrologers and found the above combinations in them. Our sincere thanks to all of them who made this research a success.

Some Basics of Astrology Revisited - I

After I started learning Astrology, I came across many assumptions like twelve signs and what they represent in our lives and their classification, nine planets, their properties and how they affect our lives etc. But, there was no real reference to explain why 12 houses represent what they represent and why these planets affect us the way they affect us. The general belief is that this is the knowledge handed over to us by our sages and we follow them. And, this knowledge was handed over to our sages by none other than Brahma himself. All that is fine. But, my problem was that I could not find the basis for all these assumptions on the physical plane. As these planets affect us on the physical plane, there should be some way to explain their properties on the physical plane. Because, everything that exists in this universe – stars, planets, us, all objects… are all energy forms and energy forms constantly interact with each other in this universe through radiation. Each and every object in this universe emits radiation. There should be a logical method to explain the effect of planets on us. Only, we don’t know it very well today. It is a humungous task to find plausible explanation of each and every assumption that we make in Astrology. It could consume the time of many over many births to find all answers. Nevertheless, I wanted to make a start and see what is that I can discover during my lifetime.

In Astrology, we classify planets into various categories such as Satvik, Rajasik and Tamasik based on tri-gunas. We also classify them into natural benefics and natural malefics. In addition, we also have for any given planet some planets are considered friends and some other planets considered as enemies. We have many mythological stories from ancient times to help us remember their gunas, friendships etc. in an easy manner. I applaud our ancestors for developing such a wonderful system for helping everyone, especially astrologers to easily recall a story and then attribute certain properties to planets. These are juicy stories that stay in memory and hence easy to recall. But, what is the real basis behind such classification? This question always haunted me from the very beginning of my astrological journey. If you ask any astrologer why Jupiter is classified as satvik, he would easily quote references from mythology. He would say that Jupiter is none other than Brishaspathi, the Guru of Gods – a satvik person and hence Jupiter is considered a satvik planet. But, what I wanted to know was, why the planet Jupiter, a physical body, found in our Solar system is capable of inducing satvik thoughts in us?

As per Indian Astrology, Sun, Moon, and Jupiter are classified as Satvik planets, Mercury and Venus as Rajasik planets, Saturn, Mars and Rahu and Ketu are known as tamasik planets. In another classification Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon are classified as natural benefics and Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are classified as natural malefics. I always wondered about the basis of this classification. As I believe that the planets affect us on the physical plane, there should be some physical properties of these planets based on which we could explain the classification as used in Astrology.

I looked at different properties of the planets like what they are made up of, how big they are and how far are they from earth to get a clue on their classification. But, none gave any clue. Finally, I found one correlation to build a bridge between what is assumed in astrology and what we could find on the physical plane. I didn’t know that what I learnt in my primary school would help me out here. It is VIBGYOR! Yes, it is the spectrum of light and the sequential arrangement of different colours in the spectrum that holds the key! First list these colours in the right order and mark the planets associated with these colours against respective colours, you will observe some pattern:

We have four groups of planets here, the top and bottom being Tamasik, second being Rajasik and the third being Satvik.

It is clear that such a planet classification has some meaning on the physical plane also. Let us see more closely what the arrangement of VIBGYOR represent. It would not be wrong to assume that the radiation of each of the planet is very similar in wavelengths of the colours they represent in Astrolgy. Look at the following picture [1]:

We can draw the following conclusions based the spectrum diagram and the colour that each planet represents:

1. The electromagnetic radiation of all physical planets in the solar system is mostly in the visible spectrum range (between 400 to 700 nanometers - nm)

2. Rahu (ultraviolet, 10 to 400 nm) and Ketu (infrared, between 700 nm to 1mm) radiations are beyond the visible range.

3. Within the range between Rahu and Ketu, planets emitting in higher wavelengths (above 540 nm) seem to be friendly to each other and planets emitting in lower wavelengths (below 540 nm) seem to be friendly to each other.

4. Planets emitting radiation in higher wavelengths and lower wavelengths seem to be not in harmony with each other.

5. The radiation that is considered as benefic to us is small range of wavelengths between 440 to 580 nm.

6. In general, the radiation wavelengths of Tamasik planets will be either lower than 440 nm or higher than 620 nm.

7. In general, the radiation wavelengths of Rajasik planets would be in the range of 440 to 540 nm.

8. In general, the radiation wavelengths of Satvik planets would be between 540 to 620 nm.

It is now evident that the wavelength of the radiation of a planet determines its basic characteristic and the nature of influence on us. Probably, we could generalize saying that any radition from any object in the specified range (as discussed above) would have similar effect on us.

When big age difference with the partner does not matter!

It is very interesting to note that many times people develop a relationship with either people much older than they are or with people much younger than they are. This applies to individuals of either sex. Though this kind of relationship is not very common, we do find such relationships in our society. The question is what drives such alliances? In some poor families where the poor parents almost sell their young daughters for material gains in the guise of a relationship. That is purely exploitation. In some other cases it could be exploitation by muscle power. In other cases it is purely by mutual attraction and consent.

I would like to exclude such cases driven by exploitation and focus on relationships developed between two mature individuals with mutual consent for the current scope of study. Most likely, in such cases, the decisions are likely to be emotionally driven than anything else. Obviously, Moon should play an important role here. Also, such people break the norms of the society, go ahead and demonstrate that they are different. Undoubtedly, one could imagine the influence of Rahu in such situations. I also wanted to look for the combinations for love marriage showing up as these relationships are usually developed between them rather than arranged. Another key player would be Saturn. Saturn is the planet that represents aging.

Care should be taken to observe the common practices in that society, I mean consider desha, kaala and patra. For example, 50-60 years ago, it was a matter of practice in many societies in India to have huge age difference between the couple; husbands were generally much older than their wives. Even my father is 12 years older than my mother. They got married during the year 1940. Such a case is not an anomaly in their society at that time and hence does not fall in the special category under study.

While studying horoscopes of some individuals who had relationship with either much younger or much older than their age, initially I tried to focus on 7H / 7L and navamsha etc. But, I failed to notice any clear pattern emerging. Later, I started looking at Upapada Lagna (UL). It is then I started seeing a pattern. I have put down the details of this pattern below.

I have observed the following combinations in charts for developing a relationship with people either much younger or much older than themselves:

Combinations for Love Marriage/Relationship: 7th lord having a relationship with 3rd house/Lord or 5th house/lord
Rahu influences UL or UL lord or Moon
Moon influences UL or UL lord
Saturn influences UL or UL lord
Such a relationship develops during MD/AD of Rahu, Moon, Saturn or the UL lord

Majority of these combinations can be traced in charts of people having developed such relationships. I couldn’t really differentiate between the charts of people who marry much younger people as against charts of people who marry much older people. Hence, one could say that people with these combinations don’t seem to care about the age of the partner. It could be a very insignificant factor to them. They might be thinking “After all Gold is Gold, don’t care if it is old or new”! However, I can present one clue - If Saturn has the strongest influence on the UL, the native develops a relationship with people who are much older. Where as when Moon has the strongest influence on the UL, it can go either way. Probably, the clue to this is from a Shloka in Phaladeepika of Mantreshwara - Chater 2, shloka 8. Here Mantreshwara describes Moon to be both old as well as young.

Examples:

1. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

Though Ashton Kutcher is Demi Moore’s third husband, this relationship is of interest for the reasons that Ashton is 15 years younger to her and more interestingly this relationship developed during Demi Moore’s Vimshottari period Rahu-Moon and they got married during Rahu-Mars period. Note that Moon is the dispositor for both Rahu and Mars! The relationship began during 2003 and they got married during September 2005 [1][2]. This is the chart of Demi Moore:

Rahu influences Moon
Moon and Saturn aspect both UL and UL lord Venus
Saturn aspects UL
7th lord Sun is with 5th lord Mercury and is aspected by 3rd lord Mars
Relationship developed during Rahu-Moon period and they got married during Rahu-Mars period. Mars is disposited by Moon.

Rahu influences Moon, also occupies nakshatra of Moon who is the UL lord as well
Moon owns UL and also aspects UL.
Saturn being in Nakshatra parivartna with Ketu, influences UL through Ketu.
7th lord Mars is in 3rd and being aspected by both 3rd lord Moon and 5th lord Mercury.

Note: When I say Rahu influences Moon, I am not saying that Rahu is aspecting Moon. Instead, what I believe is that Rahu and Ketu influence the tatwa they are sitting in. Here Rahu is sitting in earth tatwa. Thereby, it influences all earth tatwa signs and planets in them including Moon in Capricorn. Similarly Ketu is sitting in Jala tatwa hence influences the jala tatwa sings and planets sitting in them including UL in Cancer.

2. A Couple from Kerala with an age difference of about 22 years!

Here is a case of a man, who happened to marry second time after divorcing the first wife. The interesting part is that in both marriages, the wives were much younger to him. The first wife was 12 years younger to him and the second wife is 22 years younger to him. Both marriages were love marriages! He has a daughter from the first wife. I don’t have the chart of the first wife though. I will be presenting the charts of the man and his second wife. It is very interesting to note that he has Moon sitting in his UL and his second wife has Saturn occupying her UL! He is a 1965 born male and the first marriage took place during 1997 with a 19 year old girl and the second marriage took place during November 2007, again with a 19 year old girl! The second wife happens to be a highly talented girl with some literary publications to her credit already at a young age of 19! Let us look at the charts:

First the lady's chart:

Rahu influences UL lord Jupiter and also influences Moon’s sign Cancer.
Moon's dispositor in UL
Saturn occupies UL
7th lord Venus is with 3rd lord Mercury and 5th lord Sun is in 7th lord’s nakshatra

Saturn’s dispositer is in the UL
Relationship between 7th, 3rd and 5th lords not seen. Hence, I guess the affair is mostly driven by the lady
Relationship developed and marriage happened during Jup-Sat period. AD lord Saturn is disposited by Rahu.

3. A Sri Lankan couple with an age difference of 18 years!

They got married when the man was about 48 years old (his first marriage!) and the lady was about 30 years old. The man delayed his marriage due to early death of his father and having to take up family responsibilities. They have adopted a child. The marriage took place during December 1992.

Rahu in Moon’s house Cancer and is with UL lord Jupiter
Moon occupies UL and is in parivartana with UL lord Jupiter
Saturn aspects UL
7th lord Jupiter is with 3rd lord Mars and conjunct Rahu who is in the nakshatra of 5th lord Saturn

And his wife:

Rahu in Moon’s house Cancer and is co-lord of UL
Moon occupies UL and is in parivartana with UL co-lord Rahu
Saturn is co-lord of UL
7th lord Mercury is aspected by 3rd co-lord Saturn and influenced by 3rd co-lord Rahu. Mercury is also in the nakshatra of 3rd co-lord Saturn. Direct influence of 5th lord on 7th lord is not seen. Hence, for this lady, this marriage could be more of an agreement and not necessarily resulted by a love affair.
Marriage took place during Jup-Moon-Jup period. Note that both Moon and Jupiter are disposited by Rahu

4. Uma Thurman:

Though I don’t have the charts of her partners, it is very interesting to even just look at her chart alone.

Uma has Saturn in the UL of her Rasi Chart. She has been through multiple relationships. In at least three relationships, her partners are much older than her. Some info. From Wikipedia [3]:

While living in London to avoid the Dangerous Liaisons hype, she began dating director Phil Joanou, who had just produced U2’s movie Rattle and Hum in 1988. While visiting the set of his latest project, State Of Grace, she met English actor Gary Oldman. The two hit it off immediately and were married in 1990, but the marriage only lasted two years, reportedly caused by the little time they spent together due to their busy acting schedules.

She currently resides in Hyde Park, New York. In 2004, she began dating New York hotelier Andre Balazs. At one point, they lived in a loft apartment in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, down the street from Balazs’s Mercer Hotel.

All the three gentlemen referred to in the above paragraphs are much older to her. Phil Joanou is about 9 years older, Gary Oldman is about 12 years older and Andre Balaraz is 13 years older than her! The first two relationships happened during Rahu MD. The third one happened during Moon AD!

Looking her chart is even more interesting. She has leo lagna. Her UL (Aries) lord Mars has nakshatra parivartana with Moon. Saturn occupies UL. 7th lord Saturn is in the nakshatra of 3rd lord Venus and is aspected by 5th lord Jupiter.

Her birth details are as follows:
Birthday: April 29, 1970; Time of birth: 13:51; Place of birth: Boston, Massachusetts, USA

5. Rupert & Anna Murdoch

This is a very interesting couple. Rupert married very young women and Anna married very old men.

I dont have any information on the age of the first wife Patricia whom he married in 1956 (Venus MD). But, his other two marriages were to much younger ladies. His second wife Anna is 13 years younger to him. They married during his Moon MD and her Saturn AD period! Next, he married a Chinese lady who is 38 years younger to him! This happened in his Jup-Jup period. Please notice that Jupiter disposits both Moon and Rahu in his chart!

In case of Anna, the chart has the following combination:

Moon sits in UL
Rahu sits in Moon's house Cancer
Saturn is conjunct UL lord Venus

We have already seen that she first married Rupert Murdoch who is 13 years older than her. Next, after divorcing him, she married William Mann who is 27 years older than her! She married him during Mer-Mer period in October 1999. Interestingly, Mercury is conjunct UL lord Venus as well as is the dispostor of UL lord Venus!

Birth details: Rupert Murdoch - March 11, 1931 - 23:59 hrs, Melbourne, Australia
Anna Murdoch - June 30, 1944 - 8:40 hrs, Bridge of Allan, UK

One can find many more examples like this if more time and energy are put into work. Lack of authentic birth details prevent from studying many more charts of interest. I present some more cases quickly here. Please note that I have looked at the charts of people whose names appear in red and found the combination I have described in their charts:

Clint Eastwood’s second wife Dina Ruiz is 35 years younger to him. They got married on March 31, 1996 which is during Moon-Sat period for Clint and it was Moon-Moon period for Dina!
Donald Trump, an American business magnet, married Melania Knauss who is 24 years younger to him, on January 22, 2005. This is Rah-Sat period for him. His ex-wife Ivana Trump is rumoured to have a relationship with Rossano Rubican who is 23 years younger to her.
Larry King of TV fame married Shawn Southwick who is 26 years younger to him on September 5, 1997, as his 7th wife! This was during Rah-Sun-Moon period for him.
Tony Randall, an American actor in comic roles, at the age of 75, married Heather Harlan who is 50 years younger to him! The marriage took place on November 17, 1995. This is during Mer-Rah-Sat period for him.
Miceal Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones who is 25 years younger to him on November 18, 2000. That is Rah-Ven period for him and Mer-Sat period for her!

Tom Cruise

To conclude, it appers that UL plays a very important role in the relationships of an individual. It would be interesting to take up other facets of a relationship using the factors associated with UL.

Small Problem, Big Headache! (Dandruff)

In our life, many a times, we encounter problems which are not of life and death in nature or serious enough to go to a Doctor or even an Astrologer in a hurry. But, they keep on nagging and even become a source of embarrassment at times. Especially, Astrologers who face serious questions of life everyday wouldn’t be bothered by their clients for such ‘silly matters’. I picked up one such issue for study as this nagging problem was troubling my daughter.

Ever wondered what common problem is troubling/troubled these celebrities – Bill Gates, Brad Pitt, Gordon Brown and John Lennon? No, it is nothing to do with Fame, Following or Fortune. It is Dandruff! Yes, all these men suffer(ed) from the same problem. It is not difficult to find someone with dandruff problem even in our own home or in the neighbourhood. Yet, no one has formulated any Astrological Combination for dandruff problem. As I said earlier, probably no one thought this subject is important enough to take up for study. Anyway, people who really suffer from this problem might disagree. According to Proctor and Gamble, it affects more than 50% of the population of the USA! The number could be similar in India as well.

Before looking at the astrological reasons, let us first understand what dandruff is and how it is caused. Many sites over the internet give lot of information on this subject [1], [2]. Dandruff is an itchy, annoying and persistent skin disorder of the scalp. Dandruff can cause either an overly dry scalp with itchy white flakes that may be waxy/greasy or dandruff can manifest as an oily greasy scalp with scales. It is also believed that dandruff is caused by a tiny fungus, the yeast Pityrosporum ovale, on the scalp. Although the experts are certain that the yeast is involved, they can not decide which comes first: does a reaction to the yeast actually cause the increased turnover and flaking; or does the flaky skin simply provide an ideal environment for the yeast to thrive? It seems very likely that the former is the case, so getting rid of the yeast should improve the dandruff. It has been also observed that the problem is more severe in winter than in summer. One reason for this could be that sunlight inhibits the growth of the Pityrosporum ovale yeast. Other known causes that cause dandruff are deficiency of B6 vitamin and lack of fatty acids. Food supplements that are rich in these will help controlling dandruff.

Now let us map the astrological factors for the above scientific explanation. Dandruff is predominantly a problem of the scalp. Hence, we can see that lagna representing head region and connected to it an afflicted Mercury that represents skin. The deficiency of fatty acids and B6 vitamin could indicate a weak Jupiter. Note that B6 is also found in lever (represented by Jupiter) which helps in maintaining the blood glucose level. An aspect of Sun on Lagna or Sun in Lagna might help prevent or reduce the intensity of the problem even if other conditions favourable for dandruff exist. Any benefic aspects on Lagna/Mercury/Jupiter will help reducing the intensity. The problem surfaces during appropriate dasha-bhuktis that influence Lagna or Mercury or Jupiter. I started looking at the charts of people suffering from dandruff for these parameters. Not surprisingly, I was on the dot!

As the sign Aries represents head of Kalapurusha, the combination could be seen from Aries also in some charts instead of Lagna.

These combinations can be seen in the charts of people who have substantial dandruff problem. Here are a few examples:

1. Gordon Brown

a. Connectivity between Lagna and Mercury: Lagna is in the nakshatra of Mercury (Revati)

b. Affliction to Mercury: Mercury sufferes from Kendradhipatya dosha. Parivartana with 12L and retro Saturn.

c. Weakness of Jupiter: Jupiter is in a dusthana (12H) and conjunct three malefics

d. Sun’s protection to Lagna: None

2. John Lennon

a. Connectivity between Lagna and Mercury: Lagna is aspected by Mercury

b. Affliction to Mercury: Mercury is a dusthana lord (6L). Mercury is aspected by two retrograde planets one of which is 12L

c. Weakness of Jupiter: Jupiter is retrograde, also 12L
d. Sun’s protection to Lagna: None

3. Bill Gates

a. Connectivity between Lagna and Mercury: Mercury is Lagna Lord

b. Affliction to Mercury: Afflicted by 6L Mars. As Mercury is exalted, the problem could be in manageable proportion.

c. Weakness of Jupiter: Kendradhipatya dosha and disposited by debilitated Sun as well. Placed in maranakaraka sthana

d. Sun’s protection to Lagna: None

4. Steven Spielberg (No dandruff problem)

a. Connectivity between Lagna and Mercury: Mercury is Lagna Lord

b. Affliction to Mercury: Mercury in 6H, afflicted by 6L Ketu

c. Weakness of Jupiter: Kendradhipatya dosha, disposited and conjunct 12L Venus

Please note that, though the dandruff combination exists in toto, Sun’s aspect on lagna might have prevented it or reduced the problem to minimal levels.

Mahatma Gandhi and Bandhana Yoga

Ever since I stumbled up on Bandhana Yoga (ref: Please read my earlier article from July 2007 for the definition of Bandhana Yoga), I always wondered if it possible to explain this Yoga using Mahatma Gandhi’s chart, as all of us know that Mahatma Gandhi was arrested multiple times through out his life. He was not only arrested by British in India, he was also arrested by South African regime in South Africa. Hence, it is very interesting to view Mahatma Gandhi’s Chart from the angle of Bandhana Yoga. Initially, when I looked at this chart, I failed to recognise the yoga formation. Probably, I didn’t look carefully enough and I might have not looked at both Rasi and Bhava charts. I was also thinking that the birth time of Mahatma Gandhi that we have today is not quite reliable (Refer to details given in Astrodatabank). May be because of this reason I did not look at his chart hard enough. After I wrote my article on Bandhana Yoga, I decided to take a closer look at Mahatma Gandhi’s chart. To my surprise, I found more than one combinations of Bandha Yoga in his chart! His Yoga formation is not very strong (not strictly as per classical definition, unlike that of Nelson Mandela or Suu Kyi) and I attribute this reason for his short stints behind the bars. Astrodabank gives 7:11:48 am LMT as the birth time with the following comments to arrive at the correct birth time of Mahatma Gandhi:

Fagan in AFA 3/l948 gives "Shake 1791, Bhadrapad Vadya 12th, three Ghatis and 12 Palas after sunrise, from Yeshawant K. Pradhan in "Voice of India," 2/24, confirmed by Ramon, who nonetheless gave 7:56 AM IST as his translation." Much later, in American Astrology 10/1976, Fagan gave 2:29:48 AM GMT which equals 7:08:12 AM LMT of Porbandar….

Even though there were so many theories about the correct birth time, I decided to go with the one chosen by Astrodatabank.

Following is my attempt to locate Bandhana Yogas in Mahatma Gandhi’s chart. But in this chart, I could locate the Bandhana Yoga in the Rasi chart and not in Sripathi Bhava. Hence, now I tend to believe that the Yoga can be traced to either in the Rasi Chart or in the Bhava Chart.

Bandhana Yoga 1 (From Lagna)

Lagna lord is Sukra, occupies a Kendra. 6th lord is Guru, also occupies a Kendra. Budha, sitting in the nakshatra of Rahu, afflicts both Sukra and Guru! Sixth lord Guru aspects lagna lord.

Bandhana Yoga 2 (From Chandra Lagna)

Chandra lagna lord is Chandra, occupies a Kendra. 6th lord from Chandra is Guru, also occupies a Kendra. Sani aspects both Chandra and Guru by Rasi Drishti! 6th lord Guru aspects Chandra Lagna lord Chandra by Sphuta Drishti. As Aroodha Lagna falls in Cancer (which is same as Chandra Lagna), one might even say that the Bandhana Yoga could be seen from Aroodha Lagna as well in this chart! No wonder Gandhiji was arrested and released so many times throughout his life time.

As each and every planet is involved either directly or indirectly in one of the Bandhana Yogas, I don’t think it is necessary to look at dasha bhuktis of the dates of arrest. He was arrested in all most all dashas starting Chandra dasha, first time on January 10, 1908(Chandra-Rahu) in South Africa. Note that Rahu is disposited by Chandra who is involved in the first Bandhana Yoga. In the span of 6 years from 1908 to 1913, Gandhiji was arrested and released 6 times! All of this was in South Africa.

He was first arrested in India on April 16, 1917 (Kuja-Sukra), first time in Kuja dasha. Note that Kuja is conjunct Sukra. He was arrested thrice in Kuja dasha.

Next, in Rahu dasha, he was first arrested on May 5, 1930 (Rahu-Budha). Note that Budha is in the nakshatra of Rahu. He was arrested thrice overall in Rahu dasha as well.

Finally, he was arrected once in Guru dasha on August 9, 1942 (Guru-Sani). Please note that Guru is involved in all the Bandhana Yogas and Sani aspects Guru by Rasi drishti.

Overall, in a span of 36 years (between 1908 and 1944), Mahatma Gandhi was arrested and released 13 times! This is really mind blowing! So is the fate of a great soul and how can mere mortals like us escape the clutches of our own Karma?

Food for thought - I only wonder why he did not face any arrest during Sukra dasha...

Bandhana Yoga

Bandhana Yoga is an important yoga as it indicates whether an individual would be put behind the bars or held in captivity during his/her lifetime. I have taken the definition of this yoga from Shri B V Raman’s book titled “Three Hundred Important Combinations”. The definition and the explanation go as follows:

Definition: If the lords of Lagna and the 6th join a kendra or a kona with Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, the above yoga is given raise to.

Results: The native will be incarcerated.

Remarks: The cause of imprisonment is not made clear in this yoga. Imprisonment may be due to political or criminal offences. The lords of Lagna and the 6th should occupy a Kendra or Kona in association with Saturn or Rahu or Ketu. If the Lord of Lagna happens to be Saturn, by implication the evil is either lessened or (in some cases) completely neutralized. Benefic aspects lessen the evil.

Since the definition does not talk about Rasis in particular and talks about only placement of planets with respect Lagna, I prefer to look for this yoga in the Bhava Chart rather than in the Rasi chart. Of all the different bhava charts, I prefer Sripathi Bhava. It has given consistent results so far for this Yoga.

Also, I have noticed that the manifestation of the yoga happens in different flavors and not necessarily exactly as per the definition. However, the spirit of the definition remains in each of the flavor. Hence, I would like to broaden the definition of this yoga as follows:

Lagna lord and 6th lord should occupy a Kendra or Kona

Both of them should be influenced by one of Rahu or Ketu or Sani

6th lord should in some way influence the lagna lord

The term influence could indicate conjunction, aspect or any other type of influence. And, all three namely langna lord, 6th lord and one of Rahu/Ketu/Saturn need not occupy the same house. The combination can be traced in Rasi/Bhava or Navamsha charts. When the combination is looked at in the Navamsha chart, the lordships are taken from the Bhava Chart.

My research has indicated that the release from arrest/captivity typically happens during the period /sub-period of the dispositor of the 6th lord. When this dispositor also participates in Bandhana Yoga, then the release happens during period/sub-period of dispositor’s dispositor.

I have used Lahiri ayanamsa and True Nodes.

In the following pages, I would like to present some case studies to understand the manifestation of the yoga in different flavors.

Case Study 1: Nelson Mandela

Manifestation: Strictly as per classical definition

Lagna: 0 Dhanu 59

Lagna Lord: Guru

6th lord: Sukra

Afflictor: Ketu

Planets participating in Bandhana Yoga are: Guru, Sukra, Ketu, Dispositor Budha and Budha's associate Sani.

Looking at the dates of his arrest, we have the following data:

Arrested on Dec. 5, 1956 and released sometime during 1961 (date not known): The date of arrest falls under BUD-GUR-SAN-BUD period. All of them are participating in Bandhana Yoga.

Later, he was again arrested on August 5, 1962 and was in jail until February 11, 1990: The date of arrest falls under KET-SUK-GUR-SUK period. All of them participate in Bandhana Yoga. He was in jail for the rest of Ketu and whole of Sukra period as well. The release happened during the period of Ravi who is Dispositor’s (Budha’s) Dispositor! Ravi happens to be vargottama in this chart.

Case Study 2: Aung San Suu Kyi (Burmese Leader)
(birth time rectified to 13:07 from 13:00)

Manifestation: Strictly as per classical definition

Lagna: 18 Kanya 58

Lagna Lord: Budha

6th lord: Sani

Afflictor: Rahu

Planets participating in Bandhana Yoga are: Budha, Sani, Rahu, Sani's associate Ravi and Guru aspected by Sani.

Suu Kyi was under house arrest from 20-Jul-1989 to July 1995. The arrest date corresponds to the period SAN-SAN-GUR-RAV

She was again put under house arrest from Sep 2000 to May 2002. The arrest happened during SAN-RAH-RAV period.

She is under house arrest again from 2003 (SAN-GUR) till date (July 2007). Hence, the confinement has continued into Budha MD also. As Budha is strongly involved in the yoga, it is unlikely that she will be out of the confinement soon.

Case Study 3: Jeffery Archer (British Politician and Author)
Manifestation: This is a special case as the sambandha of lagna lord and 6th lord happens through nakashtras.

Lagna: 6 Kark 53

Lagna Lord: Chandra

6th lord: Guru

Afflictor: Ketu

The connection between lagna lord and sixth lord is: Chandra in the nakshatra of Guru. And, Guru is afflicted by Ketu.

Planets participating in Bandhana Yoga are also determined using nakshatras:

Sukra and Kuja are in the nakshatra of Chandra who is in the nakshatra of 6th lord Guru. Sani and Ravi are in the nakshatra of Ketu. There are no other planets in the nakshtra of Guru.

Jeffery Archer was sentenced to 4 years on July 19, 2001. This date falls during the period of SUK-SAN-KUJ-CHA. He was released on license after serving half the period only on July 21, 2003. This date falls during the period of SUK-BUD-RAV-GUR. Interestingly the 6th lord Guru and Ketu are in the nakshatra of Budha (the dispositor coming into play in the release?).

Case Study 4: Scott Peterson

Manifestation: The variation here is that Bandhana Yoga has manifested with reference to Chandra lagna and the malefic combination occurs in Navamsha.

Lagna lord and 6th lord being the same, is in a Kendra from both Lagna and Chandra. The affliction from Sani comes in the form of Graha Drishti.

Sani: Afflictor
Rahu: Aspected by Sani
Guru: Aspected by Sani
Ketu: Conjunct Sani

Scott Peterson was arrested for the murder of his wife on April, 18, 2003. This date falls under the period RAH-SUK-RAH-RAH. Both Rahu and Sukra participate in the Bandhana Yoga.

This is a special case as the Bandhana Yoga can be traced to the Navamsha chart as well.

The Chandra lagna lord and 6th lord (from Rasi) is in a Kendra from both Lagna and Chandra conjunct Rahu.

Case Study 5: John Allen Muhammad (Terror Suspect)

Manifestation: Reference is Chandra Lagna, and affliction of Saturn is by aspect. The combination is better visible in Rasi chart.

Both Chandra lagna lord and 6th lord are in Kendras. Chandra lagna lord is afflicted by Sani by conjunction and 6th lord is afflicted by Sani by Graha drishti. 6th lord aspects lagna lord by Graha drishti.

Muhammad was arrested on October 2, 2002. This date falls during the vishottari dasha:

SAN-BUD-RAH-RAH

Involvement of Rahu can be explained as 6th lord (from Chandra) Kuja is in Rahu’s constellation.

Case Study 6: Jimmy Hoffa (American Labor Leader)

Manifestation: The speciality lies here in the mode of affliction.

6th Lord: Chandra

Afflictor: Rahu

Lagna lord and 6th lord are in a Kendra from Lagna. They are disposited by Sukra who is afflicted by Rahu. Hence, here the affliction comes through the dispositor. One should also note that the nakshatra dispositor of Sani and Chandra is ravi. Ravi is also afflicted by Rahu in Navamsha.

There are some interesting aspects in this case:

In 1964, Hoffa was convicted of misappropriating $1.7 million in union pension funds but managed to stay out of prison until 1967 (SAN-SAN). He escaped prison for about three years until Sani MD arrived!

Though he was sentenced for 13 years, then President Nixon pardoned him and Hoffa was released during 1971 (SAN-BUD). Note that dispositor Sukra is in the nakshatra of Budha.
He went missing on July 30, 1975 (SAN-SUK-SAN-SUK). People last saw him getting into a car with some more people at a restaurant parking. Authorities believe that he was abducted and never came out live from that car. He was not to be seen again and was declared legally dead in 1982(SAN-RAH), seven years after his disappearance.

Astrology and Diabetes

Introduction

It is possible to identify the diseases a person is having, or susceptible to in the future, using Astrology. Once a person knows that he is susceptible to certain kinds of diseases, he/she could take precautions and preventive measures so as to either prevent the disease from manifesting or to reduce the intensity of a disease if it becomes inevitable. This is an example to show how Astrology can help the human kind to anticipate a problem and take preventive measures to reduce the pain and agony in the future.

Diabetes, though known as “rich man’s disease” in the past, is fast becoming a common man’s disease in our country. This could be due to changing lifestyles irrespective of whether one is rich or poor. Diabetes makes it difficult for people to live their life normally. It is a gateway to many other health complications if not properly contained. Hence, it is in our own interest to be aware if one is susceptible to this disease or not, and what to do to prevent or contain it at a manageable level. The purpose of this paper is to help people to understand what diabetes is in brief and to help them identify astrological symptoms of diabetes in their charts.

The dictums specific to diabetes are not found in the ancient texts. And, many astrologers are still grappling to understand different types of diabetes and methods to map different aspects of the disease on to Astrology, hence this attempt.

What is Diabetes?

As I am not a doctor, I have to take the help of doctors to explain what diabetes is. I have taken the content on diabetes from different web sites [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. For more information, one could refer to some of these web sites.

Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas doesn't make enough or any of the hormone insulin, or when the insulin produced doesn't work effectively. In diabetes, this causes the level of glucose in the blood to be too high.

There are three major types of diabetes:

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or Juvenile onset diabetes or Diabetes - Type 1
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or Adult onset diabetes or Diabetes - Type 2
Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women (U.S. data), and this is out of scope for discussion in this paper. Only the first two types will be covered in this paper. For ease of reading, these two types will be referred to as ‘Type 1 diabetes’ and ‘Type 2 diabetes’.

Astrological Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Type1 diabetes is a chronic (life-long) disease that occurs when the pancreas produces too little or no insulin to regulate blood sugar levels appropriately.

From the definition we know that pancreas will not produce insulin or produce too little insulin being the main reason for the disease. But, what causes such a deficiency? Doctors have given the following reasons:

In Type 1 diabetes, the cells in the pancreas that make insulin are destroyed, causing a severe lack of insulin. This is thought to be the result of the body attacking and destroying its own cells in the pancreas - known as an autoimmune reaction.

It's not clear why this happens, but a number of explanations and possible triggers of this reaction have been proposed. These include:

infection with a specific virus or bacteria;
exposure to food-borne chemical toxins; and
exposure as a very young infant to cow's milk, where an as yet unidentified component of this triggers the autoimmune reaction in the body.

Researchers suggest the following scenario:

An infection introduces a viral protein that resembles a beta-cell protein.
T cells and antibodies are tricked by this resemblance into attacking the beta protein as well as the virus.

Let me try to link the medical explanation with astrological explanation:

Insulin producing cells in the pancreas become weak (less resistant), when Venus is weak/malefic in the chart. This enables the virus to become active. The so called trick/cheating could be represented by Rahu.

Next, research has shown that Type 1 diabetes can be transmitted from one person to another through a Bone Marrow Allowgraft, when the donor is suffering from Type 1 diabetes. Also, experiments have shown that when in a Type 1 diabetes patient, insulin production could be induced using a healthy bone marrow. Hence, it appears that a defective bone marrow seems to be connected to diabetes. It is to be remembered that, in Astrology, Mars represents Bone Marrow or Majja.

Hence, to identify Type 1 diabetes in a chart, look for severely afflicted Venus, Mars and 5th house/lord (as pancreas is located in the 5th house of Kalapurusha), and afflictions specifically by Rahu. One can observe some kind of connectivity between these entities – Venus, Mars and Rahu even in D6 & D30 charts.

To summarize, the Astrological Symptoms for Type 1 Diabetes are:

Afflicted Venus (connected to a dusthana, or debilitated or retrograde, or in Papakaratari ….)
Afflicted Mars (connected to a dusthana, or debilitated or retrograde, or in Papakaratari ….)
Afflicted 5th house/lord
Rahu afflicts both Venus and Mars in one way or the other
Venus, Mars and Rahu are connected to one another, in some way or the other in Rasi, D6 and D30

I will illustrate the above symptoms using the chart of George Lucas. He is a Director, Producer and a Screenwriter in Hollywood, well known for his film ‘Star Wars’. The source for his birth data is the following web site:

Please note the following observations from the Rasi Chart:

Venus:

Conjunct 6th lord and retrograde Mercury.
Disposited by Mars who is severely afflicted by close conjunction of Rahu

Mars:

Is 8th lord and debilitated
Closely conjunct Rahu

5th house:

Is aspected by Rahu and Saturn
5th lord Ravi in PKY and disposed by Venus (5th house/lord connected to Venus)

Shashthamsa (D6):

Both Venus and Rahu are disposited by Mars

Trimsamsa (D30):

Rahu aspects Mars
Mars is disposited by Venus

One can see a clear link between Venus/5th house/5th lord, Mars and Rahu.

Let me take another example, Halle Berry’s chart this time. Time of birth is not known in this case, but does not really matter much. Take a look:

Venus:

In PKY
Dispositor Sun is afflicted by Mars and Rahu
Also in the constellation of Sun who is afflicted

Mars:

Is debilitated
Aspected by Rahu.
Dispositor Moon is severely afflicted by retrograde Saturn and Rahu

Natural 5th house Leo:

In PKY and afflicted by all three dusthana lords!
5th Lord Sun is afflicted by Mars and Rahu
Interestingly, 5th house has a relationship with Venus

Note that 5th house also contains Venus, the significator for pancreas.

Astrological Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most commonly occurring diabetes. About 90% of the diabetics suffer from this type of diabetes. The Definition for type 2 diabetes is as follows:

Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency.

There are two aspects here:

a. Relative insulin deficiency - Not enough insulin is produced

b. Insulin resistance - Body fails to properly use the insulin produced

It is a well know fact that pancreas produce insulin and in Astrology Venus is the karaka for pancreas. Hence, an afflicted Venus could indicate defective or under efficient pancreas. Hence, one could find a weak and afflicted Venus in this case also. But it is not mandatory as an individual with healthy pancreas could possibly get Type 2 diabetes. Hence, it is important to look for other symptoms which are mandatory for Type 2 diabetes.

Take a look at the second part (aspect ‘b’ above). Insulin resistance plays important role in Type 2 and is a mandatory condition. Insulin resistance is the condition in which normal amounts of insulin are inadequate to produce a normal insulin response from fat, muscle and liver cells. Hence, the problem is related to defective fat/muscle/liver cells. People who are overweight have a higher risk of insulin resistance, because fat interferes with the body's ability to use insulin.

I understand that the primary treatment for insulin resistance is exercise and weight loss.

I would like to interpret the above sentence astrologically:

Increased exercise could be read as strengthening Mars
Weight Loss (manage body weight) could be read as reduce the malefic effect of Jupiter.

The involvement of Mars and Jupiter can be explained. Fat cells and Liver cells indicate Jupiter. And, muscle cells indicate Saturn. Hence, the problem could be seen in relationship with Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. These cells interact with the insulin in the blood. Mars is the significator for ‘Majja’ or bone marrow where blood is produced. And, as Venus’s affliction is not a necessary condition, I am skipping that part, though in many cases one can clearly see the involvement of Venus as well.

I was hoping to see afflicted Jupiter and Mars in relationship with Saturn in the charts of people suffering from diabetes type 2. However, there was a small change in the pattern I noticed. Instead of Saturn getting involved with Mars and Jupiter every time, it was Rahu that showed up in the combination most of the time. It is not surprising as our rishis have proclaimed “Sanivad Rahu”.

To summarize, the Astrological Symptoms for Type 2 Diabetes are:

Afflicted Jupiter (connected to a dusthana, or debilitated or retrograde, or in Papakaratari ….)
Afflicted Mars (connected to a dusthana, or debilitated or retrograde, or in Papakaratari ….)
Sani/Rahu afflicts both Jupiter and Mars in one way or the other
Jupiter, Mars and Sani/Rahu are connected to one another, in some way or the other in Rasi, D6 and D30

Let me illustrate another example: J Jayalalitha. Different birth times are floating around on the internet, giving either Taurus Lagna or Gemini Lagna. I chose to pick Taurus Lagna to give a dusthana placement for Jupiter.

Aspected by Rahu

Mars:

Retrograde 12th lord
Aspected by both Rahu and Jupiter

Shashthamsa (D6):

Jupiter and Mars are conjunct
Rahu and Sani aspect Mars and Jupiter

The third example is of George Fernandes, ex-Defense Minister of India. I got the birth details from a friend of mine. I could not validate the birth data from another source.

Juptiter disposited by Mars and aspected by Saturn

It is also possible that someone suffering with Type 1 diabetes in the young age also becomes a target of Type 2 diabetes at a later stage in life. Hence, it is not surprising if one finds the symptoms of both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes in the same chart. These people probably are the worst hit by diabetes.

In addition to the above listed charts, I have seen these astrological symptoms in the charts of my relatives and friends who are suffering from diabetes.

Avoid confusion when looking for diabetes in a chart

As it is easy to get confused, one could start seeing diabetes symptoms in almost all the charts (as it happened to me initially). Hence, I am giving a few examples of people who are not known to have diabetes and the astrological reasons for the same.

The first example is that of Shri Satya Sai Baba.

Please note the following aspects which indicate that the native can not be a diabetic:

Neither 5th house nor the natural 5th house is afflicted by Rahu
Though Mars is retrograde, it is not afflicted by Rahu
Jupiter, though in MKS, is not afflicted by Rahu
Rahu is in his own constellation, hence does not afflict any other planet from this perspective.
Only problem I see is that Rahu’s dispositor Mercury afflicts combust Venus. However, this is not a sufficient condition to get diabetes.

Hence, one can safely conclude that this native will not suffer from either types of diabetes.

Next example would be that of Michael J Fox:

Note the following points in his chart:

Though debilitated, Mars is not afflicted by Rahu
Though aspected by Rahu, Venus is not weak as:

Not a dusthana lord
Does not occupy a dusthana
Not conjunct any dusthana lord

In the above chart, please note the following:

Mars is not weak as:

Does not own a dusthana
Does not occupy a dusthana
Not conjunct any dusthana lord
Not debilitated
Not in MKS
Not retrograde
Not in Papakartari
There is only a mild problem as Mars is in the constellation of 12th lord Moon and Mar’s dispositor Mercury is aspected by Rahu. In both these observations, the affliction comes through disposition route only and not directly. Hence, it could be ignored.

There is no need to look at either Venus or Jupiter as Mars is ‘clean’. Hence, the native did not suffer from either type of diabetes. The only connection between diabetes and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is that he was born on the ‘World Diabetes Day’!

ASTROLOGICAL INHERITANCE

(version 1.1, dtd 02-Sep-2006 - Rule ATAI_04 is rephrased)

1.0 Introduction

Most of us know about bilogical inheritance. In biology, 'Inheritance' is defined as "The process of genetic transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring". It has been scientifically proven that biological inheritance takes place through DNA. DNA is often referred to as the molecule of heredity as it is responsible for the genetic propagation of most inherited traits. In humans, these traits can range from hair colour to disease susceptibility. During cell division, DNA is replicated and can be transmitted to offspring during reproduction. Lineage studies can be done based on the fact that the mitochondrial DNA only comes from mother, and the Y chromosomes only comes from the father[1].

It is well known that everyone inherits some characteristics from their father and some characteristics from their mother. In astrology, we predict ones characteristics and character by means of the planetary positions in their chart. If a person has inherited his/her characteristics from his/her parents biologically, it is logical to say that he/she inherits the planetary positions also from the parents. There exists a relation between parent’s DNA and offspring’s DNA. Is there a similar relation between parent’s natal chart and offspring’s natal chart? This paper tries to address this question.

In my limited knowledge, I have not come across any comprehensive treatise of this subject in any astrological work whether ancient or contemporary. Yes, there a lot of information about predicting the influence of parents on children or influence of children on father or mother based on certain zodiac houses and karakas and their positions. There are also some hints about predicting inheritance of property. Apart from this, it appears that, no comprehensive research has taken place to study inheritance of planetary positions.

In my mind, I strongly believed that there has to be a clear correlation between parent’s chart and offspring’s chart as children inherit everything from parents at least until the time of birth. With this in mind, I started studying the charts of families starting with that of my own. After going around a lot in circles, I reached the most simple and the most obvious conclusions. Most of the things in this world are very complicated until we understand them. They become simple and obvious once we understand the natural laws applicable in that context. This is true for any scientific discovery. Hereby, I present the result of my research on Astrological Inheritance. I would like to call it “Astrokrishna’s Theory of Astrological Inheritance (ATAI)”. This is based on Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) principles.

2.0 Astrokrishna’s Theory of Astrological Inheritance (ATAI)

We have observed that children often exhibit certain physical features and or behavior that of parents and sometimes even that of grand parents. When children exhibit the traits of the grand parents, the same trait may or may not be visible with the parents. Hence, it can be said that some traits could be observed all through the generations whereas some other traits get hidden in one generation and could reappear in the next generation. I propose that a similar transformation happens astrologically as well.

It means that all planetary positions of the parents need not reflect directly (in the same position) in the offspring’s chart. However, when a planet occupies a certain position in the child’s chart, it will have certain correlation to the position in the parents chart. And this new position could transform again in the next generation to get to the same/similar position in the chart of the third generation. To make it simple, let me take an example. Let us assume that Sun occupies a position X in mother’s chart and a position Y in father’s chart. And, Sun occupies a position Z in the child’s chart. My theory is that the position Z has some correlation with either position X or position Y or both. Z being equal to X or Y is also a possibility (in this case, the traits of a parent represented by Sun could be directly seen in the child also). If Z is not equal to either X or Y, that particular trait is hidden or transformed. However, in the grandchild’s chart the Sun could be in position X or Y or Z or in some other transformed position. If Sun occupies either position X or Y in the grandchild’s chart, we could see some traits of the grandparent visible in the grandchild. It is also possible that siblings demonstrate similar traits. It means that both children would have the same planet transformation from the parent’s chart. For example, I have Simha lagna in my chart. Both my parents have different lagnas. Hence, my lagna position has undergone certain transformation from that of my parents. One of my sisters shares Simha lagna with me. It means that myself and my sister have inherited the same transformation of lagna position from our parents. My younger daughter also shares Simha lagna. My wife has a different lagna. Hence, I could conclude that my younger daughter has inherited Simha Lagna from me.

I have studied the transformations of the lagna, the seven planets and the two nodes (Rahu and Ketu). I have not looked at Uranus Neptune and Pluto as these are not used in Vedic astrology. However, I assume that if the theory is applicable to these ten entities, it should be applicable in case of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as well.

I have used the term ‘transformation’ without stating what I mean so far. Now, the time has come to see what transformation means in the context of Astrological Inheritance.

2.1 Transformation of planetary positions

The simplest or the basic transformation is based on graha drishti of a planet. We all know that all planets have graha drishti on the 7th ‘house’ from their own house. I would like to explain the term ‘house’ in the context of this paper as it takes a slightly different meaning than the traditional one. Let us take an example of Sun being at Simha 21° or at 141° in the chart of a father. With respect to Sun, the ‘house of the Sun’ will extend 15° on either side of its position and 30° in size. Hence, Sun’s house is from 126° to 156°. In the child’s chart, the Sun could occupy a position at 7th house from the Sun’s house, based on graha dristi; that is from 306° to 336°. That is if the Sun’s position for the child is getting transformed from the father’s chart. Alternately, Sun’s position in the child’s chart could get transformed by the mother’s chart as well.

All the seven planets and the two nodes could undergo this basic transformation. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn would undergo special transformations in addition. These additional transformations are in line with the additional graha drishti of these planets. Mars undergoes additional transformation to either 4th house or to 8th house. Jupiter undergoes additional transformation either to 5th house or to 9th house. Saturn undergoes additional transformation to either to 3rd house or to 10th house. Rahu undergoes special transformation to 2nd house or to 5th house or to 9th house. Ketu follows Rahu. Lagna behaves like its dispositor. By default, the position of planet in the child chart could be in the same house as that of one of the parents.

Let us call the rule for this transformation based on graha drishti as Rule ATAI_01 or Graha Drishti Rule. This reference is used while describing transformation in the case studies later.

2.2 Other Transformations

Some special situations arise due to either special status of the planet in one or more charts or due to relative positions in the parent charts. Following rules cover the transformations under these special situations.

2.2.1 Rule ATAI_02 or Kendra_Trikona Rule

This rule applies when a planet occupies a Kendra or a Trikona from its own house in one of the parent charts. In such cases, that planet tries to keep the same relationship in the child chart as well.

When a planet is at trines from its own house in one of the parent charts, the child position will also be at trines to the parent position.
When a planet is at a Kendra from its own house in one of the parent charts, the child position will also be at a Kendra to parent position.

One default case of this rule is that the child position could be in the same house as that of the parent position.
2.2.2 Rule ATAI_03 or Vargottama Rule
When a planet is vargottama, it indicates the special status of a planet and that planet will become much stronger. This strength forces the child position to inherit the same tatwa from one of the parents. Hence, the rule looks as follows:

When a planet is Vargottama (less than 30° apart in D1 and D9 charts) in one of the three (father, mother or child) charts, the child position of the planet could be at a Trine to one of the parent positions. As trines are natural aspect directions in case of Guru and Rahu, the special positions they take would be Kendras instead of Trines. This is an additional possibility. Kendras are special positions in chart analogous to the pillars or a building. One type of strength gets transformed into another type of strength.
When a planet is Vargottama in more than one of the three charts, the child position of the planet could be at a Kendra to one of the parent positions. This is an additional possibility.

<>2.2.3 Rule ATAI_04 or Dispositor/Parivartana Yoga Rule
The child position of a planet would be at 2nd of 12th house of the parent house, when the dispositor of the parent planet has some relationship with the planet. Some examples are listed below:

When the dispositor of a planet occupies its own house (PDO)
When the dispositor of a planet is in Parivartana yoga in one of the parent charts (PDP)
When a planet is aspected by its dispositor in the parent chart(PDA)
When a planet is in Parivartana yoga in the parent chart (PP)
When a planet is connected to its dispostor either by direct conjunction (within 15° from each other) or by a chain of conjunctions (PDC). Examples: a) Ravi is at Taurus 10° and his dispositor Sukra is at Aries 27°. Though they are in different houses, they are said to be conjunct as they are within 15° from each other. b) Ravi is at Gemini 5°, Kuja is at Taurus 22° and Budha is at Taurus 12°. Here, Ravi and its dispostor Budha are connected via conjunctions with Kuja (even though they are separated by more than 15°).

When any of the above situations is observed in a child chart (and not necessarily in the parent chart), the child position of that planet will be at either 3rd or 11th house from either of the parent positions. The corresponding notations could be CDO, CDP, CDA, CP, CDC.
2.2.4 Rule ATAI_05 or Proximity Rule

This situation occurs when the positions of a planet are very close to each other in the parent charts (less than 30°). For example say the position of Sun in fathers chart is at 58° and the position of the Sun in mother’s chart at 75°. They are less than 30° apart. Under such a situation, if none of the other 4 four rules are applicable, no well defined pattern for the child position is observed.

In many cases, the child position of the planet will be at 3rd or 6th or 8th or 11th house from the parent position. Other positions can not be ruled out. This needs further investigation.

When multiple rules are applicable in case of a planet, it is not necessary that the actual transformation satisfies all the applicable rules. Transformation happens based on one of the applicable rules.

3.0 Case Studies

Some case studies have been presented here to demonstrate the theory that has been proposed. And, it would become easier for the reader to try out their own cases by looking at these examples. Cases of some famous individuals have been presented though it is often very difficult to get authentic birth data for both the parents and the child. In the tables, positions of the planets have been rounded off to the nearest degree to keep things simple.

Each table in the case studies presented gives the Rasi (D-1) positions of the planets for father, mother and the child. Next to the 'Child' column, the 'Transformation' column gives the arithmetic for the transformation, and difference between the actual and expected exact target positions. A difference up to 15° is fine for the planet to be anywhere in the target house of 30° in size. This column also gives what is the target house in brackets. The last column 'Rule Applicable' gives the rule name for the transformation applied.

3.1 Case Study 1: Rahul Gandhi

- Inherited from father - Inherited from mother

V- Vargottama

In this case all the 5 rules defined are applicable. Only two positions are inherited from the father and the rest all from the mother. None of the child positions are in the same house that or the parents. All planetary positions have got transformed.

3.2 Case Study 2: Shiloh Nouvel Jolie Pitt

In this case, it is interesting to see that the child has directly inherited (same or trine) Lagna, Ravi and Budha positions from the mother and has directly inherited Chandra’s position from the father. Hence, it is highly likely that the physical appearance and communication abilities of the child would be closer to that of the mother and the emotional make up will be closer to that of the father. The physical resemblance with the mother would be striking as both Lagna and Lagnakaraka Ravi’s positions are inherited from the mother directly. The transformations in case of other planets indicate that the child has inherited other aspects from grandparents or from other ancestors.

3.3 Case Study 3: Jenna Bush (Daughter of George W Bush)

In case of Sukra, the difference is 18°, which is more than the acceptable limit of 15°. This could happen in rare cases.

The results for Jenna’s elder twin sister Barbara Bush would also be very similar. They were born about 15 minutes apart. The only difference in Barbara’s case is that her Lagna is at 255°. It appears their intelligence and wisdom would be similar to their mother and their logical reasoning would be similar to their father. The rest of the traits have been inherited from grandparents and other ancestors.

3.4 Case Study 4: Suri Cruise (Daughter of Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes)

The share from both the parents is equal in this case. However, none of the child positions are in the same house as that of the parent.

4.0 Conclusion

From the case studies presented, it is evident that the planetary positions of the children are derived from the planetary positions of the parents based on a set of rules. This observation is in parallel to the well known fact that the biological and behavioural traits of the children are derived from the biological traits of the parents.

It is interesting to note that this theory has been developed using widely accepted basic Jyotish principles.

In addition to the cases presented here, I have studied other cases of friends and relatives including my own family and some more international personalities. All of them fit the rules defined here.

5.0 Known Issues

This is the first cut of the theory presented based on a limited number of cases studied. When a much bigger sample is considered, it may be necessary to introduce a couple of more rules in addition to the ones already presented. I expect this theory to evolve further.
It may rarely happen that only one of the ten entities may not follow any of the rules presented. This needs further investigation
Rule ATAI_05 is very broad based. It might have to be broken into higher granular level.
Why only a particular rule gets triggered when multiple rules are applicable to a planet needs further investigation
There could be errors because of errors in birth time. Hence, it is essential to make sure that correct birth time is used. Though this is not a problem with the theory as such, people might encounter problems while applying the rules for other cases. Small birth time errors usually affect the position of lagna only in the Rasi Chart. However, if the date itself is under question, even other planetary positions will get affected.

6.0 Disclaimer

This paper does not suggest that this theory will prove the parenthood of a child when the suggested mapping is found between the charts of a couple and a child. This is not a replacement for DNA test to ascertain parenthood of a child. This is very obvious as two babies born at the same time and same place will have same planet longitudes. It does not necessarily mean that they are born to same parents.

7.0 Further Research

It would be interesting to study why in some cases father’s planet position wins over mother’s planet position and in some cases why mother’s planet position wins over the father’s planet position during the formation of child’s chart. Is it due to the relative inherent strength of a planet or is it due to the relative strength of a planet with respect to transits at the time of conceiving is something yet to be established.

Another possibility is to predict the possible time periods of child-birth for a couple. Though it might take lot of work, it is still a possibility.

It would also be interesting to study astrological inheritance in parallel with biological inheritance. I believe that it is possible to draw parallels between the transformation of planetary positions in the chart and the mutation of the genes.

Information is stored in DNA in the sequence of bases just as information can be stored in a book in the sequence of letters. The total amount of DNA in one cell is known as the genome. Each human cell contains approximately 3 billion base pairs of DNA organized in 23 pairs of chromosomes [2]. In Jyotish, we have 10 entities, the relative placement of these 10 entities, 30° in each house, 12 houses in each chart, and 60 possible divisional charts. A combination of these parameters can produce a number of the order of the number that would require for DNA fingerprinting. It might be possible to establish a relationship with genes and planetary state in a chart. Also, one could draw parallels between transmission of genes from parent to child and transformation of planetary positions from parent to child. Once such a relationship is established, it will help to understand some of the defects in the genes by studying charts alone without having to do extensive or expensive tests in the lab. That will clearly demonstrate that Astrology can provide help to Medicinal Biology.
